This graph appears to show a decline in measles cases prior to the introduction of the measles vaccine. Why is that? : askscience
diseases like measles, tuberculosis, typhoid, etc. was primarily due to the availability of medical measures like vaccines or due to something else like improving public health measures (improved sanitation, less urban crowding) that made the spread of infectious disease more difficult. The authors observed mortality rates from a number of different infectious diseases (including measles) over the last century and found that most death rates had already been in sharp decline years before the availability of condition specific vaccines or drugs.
