Retracted: How an Alt-Right Bot Network Took Down Al Franken
Newsweek has retracted its story about a conservative botnet effort to force the resignation of Senator Al Franken.
The initial report was based on research conducted by Unhack The Vote, a group examining outside influence in U.S. elections and politics. It alleged that a "decidedly alt-right" botnet "weaponized" anti-Franken stories and amplified pressure on Franken to resign after allegations of sexual misconduct. Newsweek was unable to independently verify their claims after a further review of their work.
Newsweek regrets the error.
The retracted story identified Mike Cernovich as one of the "prominent, real, live members of the far right" who "spewed thousands of [twitter] posts" pressuring Senator Franken to resign. In a letter through his attorney, Cernovich has alleged the story wrongly connected him to a foreign bot network, falsely suggesting he was a foreign agent. Newsweek did not intend any such implication, and regrets any misunderstanding.

A new study just revealed Al Franken fell victim to a coordinated foreign cybersmear campaign
Senator Al Franken’s (D-MIN) resignation from the U.S. Senate was fueled by, according to Newsweek, by “white nationalist provocateurs, a pair of fake news sites, an army of Twitter bots and other cyber tricks.”
It is unclear if the huge cyber effort to get the liberal Democratic Senator from Minnesota was paid for by Russia, alt-right Americans or the Japanese, but after radio personality Leeann Tweeden made her accusations against Franken and showed photos that seemed to suggest Franken molested her, a pair of Japanese-based websites created the day before and a number of Twitter bots splashed Tweeden’s outrageous story all over cyber-space and made it go viral.

How an Alt-Right Bot Network Took Down Al Franken
White nationalist provocateurs, a pair of fake news sites, an army of Twitter bots and other cyber tricks helped derail Democratic Senator Al Franken last year, new research shows.
While everyone has been focused on Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election to support Donald Trump, the Franken takedown originated in—and was propelled by—a strategic online campaign with digital tentacles reaching to, of all places, Japan. Analysts have now mapped out how Hooters pinup girl and lad-mag model Leeann Tweeden's initial accusation against Franken became effective propaganda after right-wing black ops master Roger Stone first hinted at the allegation.
A pair of Japan-based websites, created the day before Tweeden came forward, and a swarm of related Twitter bots made the Tweeden story go viral and then weaponized a liberal writer's criticism of Franken. The bot army—in tandem with prominent real, live members of the far right who have Twitter followers in the millions, such as Mike Cernovich—spewed thousands of posts, helping the #FrankenFondles hashtag and the "Franken is a groper" meme effectively silence the testimonies of eight former female staffers who defended the Minnesota Democrat before he resigned last year.

Why Democrats Are Finally Pushing Franken To Resign | FiveThirtyEight
Three weeks ago, after Leeann Tweeden accused Minnesota Sen. Al Franken of groping her and kissing her without her consent, we argued that Democrats ought to have pushed for Franken to resign. Doing so would have allowed them to claim the moral high ground at a time when allegations of sexual misconduct had implicated both Democratic and Republican politicians — including President Trump and Roy Moore, the Republican Senate candidate in Alabama. It would also have come at a relatively small political price, since Franken’s replacement would be named by a Democratic governor and Democrats would be favored to keep the seat in a special election in 2018.
Democrats didn’t see it the same way; instead, the party line was that Franken’s case should be referred to the Senate ethics committee. But the party has since shifted gears: On Wednesday, a cavalcade of Democratic senators — first several female members, such as New York’s Kirsten Gillibrand and Hawaii’s Mazie Hirono, but eventually including party leaders such as New York’s Chuck Schumer — called on Franken to resign. Franken’s office has said he’ll make an announcement about his future on Thursday, which many reporters expect to be a resignation.

Bush's Speechwriter Just Gave The Hands Down Best Response To The Al Franken Controversy
Even as Republicans begin to fall in line behind a pedophile who was already lawlessly extreme enough to be removed from the bench twice, Democrats are debating whether a Senator accused of forced kissing and grabbing a sleeping woman’s breasts in a photograph should resign.
David Frum, former speechwriter to President George W. Bush, sees reason for concern in the dichotomy and made it known today on Twitter (below).
To be clear, even as new evidence calls into question some of the claims of Senator Al Franken’s (D-MN), there is no excuse for taking a picture in which he appears to be holding a woman’s breasts while she slept. Franken himself has acknowledged as much.
Putting that in the same context as Alabama Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore’s decades-long pattern of preying on girls as young as 14 borders on the absurd.

Net neutrality rules should apply to ISPs and websites, senator says | Ars Technica
Franken: Google, Facebook, and others are a "new kind" of Internet gatekeeper.
Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) wants the US to impose net neutrality rules on Google, Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, and other Web companies.
Net neutrality rules today apply only to Internet service providers, such as cable companies and mobile carriers. ISPs are not allowed to block, throttle, or demand payments to prioritize delivery of lawful Internet traffic. The rules are meant to give all websites—both the established players and startups—a fair shot at reaching Internet users.
But Franken argues that similar non-discrimination rules should apply to the most dominant websites.
"As tech giants become a new kind of Internet gatekeeper, I believe the same basic principles of net neutrality should apply here: no one company should have the power to pick and choose which content reaches consumers and which doesn't," Franken wrote yesterday in an op-ed for The Guardian. "Facebook, Google, and Amazon—like ISPs—should be 'neutral' in their treatment of the flow of lawful information and commerce on their platforms."
