Amazon's Kindle turns 10: have ebooks clicked with you yet?
No more schlepping to a bookshop, or – imagine – a library. No more waiting for the post. A direct connection from electronic page to electronic shop made bookbuying a seamless part of the reading experience. And it worked. According to the American Association of Publishers, ebook sales leapt from $20m in 2006 to $53.5m in 2008, the first full year of the Kindle era, and are now worth about $1bn (£756m) a year. Here in the UK, Nielsen suggests that digital books now make up around a quarter of the market.

Jack Kerouac's On The Road turned into Google driving directions and published as a free eBook
Gregor Weichbrodt, a German college student, took all of the geographic stops mentioned in On the Road, plugged them into Google Maps, and ended up with a 45-page manual of driving directions, divided into chapters paralleling those of Kerouac's original book. You can read the manual -- On the Road for 17,527 Miles-- as a free ebook.

White paper explores how to redesign scholarly monograph for digital use
The idea of a product that, at a glance, can point scholars to the exact point in a book that is relevant to their research may sound like science fiction, but that’s how the scholarly database JSTOR is pitching a recently released research tool.
The tool, called Topicgraph, is part of a JSTOR project to take the digital scholarly monograph from a PDF to something more useful for researchers. The organization on Monday published the final version of a white paper outlining 13 ideas on how to do so, ranging from the convenient -- such as giving readers more navigational tools within digital books -- to the complicated, like removing restrictions on how readers use and reuse books.

How eBooks lost their shine: 'Kindles now look clunky and unhip'
“It’s not about the death of ebooks,” Daunt says. “It’s about ebooks finding their natural level. Even in the years when ebook sales were rising greatly – and clearly cannibalising physical book sales – it was always very clear that we would have a correction and reach an equilibrium.”
