marmalade_fish: TDS deleted scenes
“It’s no different,” Anzu whispered to him. “He’s no different. That you thought he was: that was the lie, that’s why you’re in pain now. Don’t believe it, Hnikarr. They’re liars, and this is the greatest lie of all. Don’t let them make you into this.”

Nick violently threw down his sword. Anzu did not hesitate for a second. He stepped in, close enough to stab, and caught Nick’s black hair in his fingers, forcing him to meet his eyes.

“It was all a lie,” Anzu murmured, cruel and almost pleading, both at once. “I’m your brother. Not him.”

He kissed him savagely on the mouth. It only lasted a second, before Nick shuddered and turned his face away.

“Don’t,” he said in his cold voice, untouched even by this. “Alan wouldn’t like it.”

“Are you stupid?” Anzu asked. “Did they break you? It doesn’t matter what Alan likes, or what Alan wants, or whether Alan would think you’re a good boy. He’s dead. I killed him. That’s what they’re for. They die. And they never matter.”

“I know they die,” Nick said. “You don’t think I was prepared for that?”

  “Then why?”

Nick kept his face turned away, a shadow refusing to see the sun. His voice was so indifferent, it was almost dry: just reporting the facts. “If he was dead a thousand years,” he said. “He would still matter. More than you ever did.”

The Demon's Fun Day Out at the Park with a Picnic by Aria
Demon's Lexicon, Alan & Nick, gen. All Nick really wants is a picnic.
Even unfettered, all Nick really wanted was to make Alan happy. He didn't think about this too hard, not with words, because no one had ever given Nick the words for it. Nick was fine with this. The world had been a bigger, freer place before Alan and Dad had taught Nick words and made all the words mean something. Nick liked that wanting Alan to be happy didn't come with words, because when he said, "He's my brother," or "Sometimes I try to be human for you," he was saying things that only covered a little of the vast, free space in which Alan was his and Nick was going to make everything okay.

Fix by aria
Demon's Lexicon, Alan/Nick. "What's stronger," Nick said, "a demon's mark or a magician's mark?" Alan reluctantly agrees to receive his brother's mark. // Uah. Both of them are very in character here, as is their weird, tangled, codependent relationship. This was written after book 2 and is jossed, but I care not--decent porn is porn.

in from the cold - auctorial - Demon's Lexicon - Sarah Rees Brennan [Archive of Our Own]
Every time Alan mentioned Durham with the same tremulous hope, the cold stone in Nick's stomach grew heavier. How long would it be until Alan realised he could have a real family, now? That he didn't need Nick? But if Alan wanted a human family, he should have it. Alan deserved everything, and Nick couldn't give him any of it.

It was only a matter of time before Alan learnt.

marmalade_fish: An obligatory apology--I haven't written
By the time Alan turned seventeen, Nick had learned to tell when he had a crush.

He always talked about them a bit more than the rest of the people he met, and he got distracted when he did. His hands would slow, or he'd forget what he was doing, or he'd stop entirely to talk while Nick bent his head and let Alan's voice wrap around him. For a year, Nick thought that was all there was to that kind of feeling: smiling for the proof of their existence alone.

Nick didn't think he would ever get one himself. Nothing made him want to smile more than a good kill, and he suspected that Alan would not be pleased if Nick went around declaring crushes on dead bodies.

sarahtales: Christmas Present!
It occurred to Nick that if people were put in drawers like pyjamas and you could pick them out, that would be an excellent arrangement. He would never pick out Mum, with all her screaming and her very quiet silences. He would always pick Alan. Alan would be his favourite.

Have done with sorrow - auctorial - Demon's Lexicon - Sarah Rees Brennan [Archive of Our Own]
A half hour later, Nick could smell the meatballs, and followed his nose inside. Alan had made spaghetti, their usual comfort food, and was just ladling a heaping serving of it onto a plate when Nick came in. He held the plate out to Nick, but didn't let go when Nick took it. "I still think this is a bad idea," Alan said, looking Nick in the eye, apparently having decided to stop being such a coward about it. "You've never wanted this before."

Alan's eyes were darker than usual, nearly all pupil. He looked nothing like Anzu had when possessing him. He looked entirely human, and beautiful. "Is that what you think?" Nick said. "You didn't know that I wanted everything you were willing to give me?"

Alan breathed. Nick mostly didn't. Silence lengthened and stretched between them. The anticipation.

"In two worlds," Nick said slowly, making sure he got the words right, "I will never love anyone as much as I love you."

Taking the Trouble To Practice - Colourofsaying - Demon's Lexicon - Sarah Rees Brennan [Archive of Our Own]
Jamie isn't sure he can pull off this whole evil-magician-with-demon-slave business, since acting isn't exactly his forte. Nick just thinks he needs to practice.
