The automaker and agency The&Partnership have created what they describe as the first ad both written by an AI and directed by an Oscar winner  (Kevin Macdonald, who won Best Documentary for One Day in September in 2000).

Creating the ad required a massive amount of back-end work, including the visual analysis of the past 15 years of Cannes Lion-winning car and luxury ads. But before we get into the details of how it was made, let’s take a look at the ad itself:

CuriosityStream's Toyota Theater Features Free Anti-Car Documentaries 11/14/2018
I was curious about CuriosityStream’s three-year-old science and tech documentary service, but reluctant to take out a subscription. So I tried CuriosityStream’s three-month-old, free, advertiser-supported service called Showcase.

In August, CuriosityStream said Showcase would have six category-exclusive sponsors before year’s end. So far, two are on board: Toyota (automotive) and Sprint (telecommunications).  

Toyota Theater has seven videos. Four are Toyota commercials, while three are episodes of a series, “Dream the Future,” in which narrator Sigourney Weaver promises to take us on “an amazing journey to 2050.”

"I want the advertising group of the automobile association to take this to heart," he said. "I will not buy a car the television ad of which shows it driving around. If that's all it can do, I don't want it."

This might explain why when Lee decided to do an Audi ad, it was the furthest thing from a sheet metal play. In April 2015, he appeared in a short film promoting Audi's sponsorship of the then-upcoming "Avengers: Age of Ultron." The spot riffed on Lee's famous pastime of appearing in cameos in the various Marvel films.
