Springfield commits to spending millions on plan to upgrade sidewalks around the city and make the usable by peo;le with disabilities | News-Leader
Jan White can't safely use about a third of the city's 640 miles of sidewalk.

She tells stories of rolling down a long, bumpy path of brick paving in her electric wheelchair only to realize the sidewalk ends. Sometimes the only available sidewalk ramp allowing her to cross an intersection is all the way at the other end of the street.

That's why they've helped advise the city on its 17-year, $30 million effort to make its sidewalks and curbs complaint with the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA — a 1990 law that prohibits discrimination for disability and requires governments to make buildings and facilities accessible to everyone.

City officials say they've been working hard to make all buildings accessible to folks who use wheelchairs or have other disabilities, but they still have a long way to go with sidewalk compliance.

MoBikeFed comment: Working to make sidewalks around the city accessible to all users is a challenge for cities all across Missouri and the nation. It is good to see Springfield addressing the issue in a productive way.
