Summary: In fifteenth century Transylvania (Wallachia), Prince Vlad Tepes Draculea rules with a bloody, iron fist. His method of dealing with enemies, both personal and political, has earned him the name of The Impaler. Though he has bedded many, Draculea’s heart has never been touched, until he seeks a bride. He chooses a young noblewoman, but it is not she who captures his heart. Instead, he falls in love with her bastard half-brother, Nicolae. After winning the boy over, he is happy, for a time. Then tragedy strikes. Draculea willingly takes on the curse of vampirism to await the rebirth of his lover.

Centuries later, Draculea meets Jonathan Harker, a naive young Englishman who bears a striking resemblance to his lost love. Convinced that he is his beloved Nicu’s reincarnation, Draculea sets out to take him, no matter what… or who stands in his way…

Review: So I read this fiction a long time ago, like back when I was still living with my mother and I had to hide my computer screen every time she came close. And there was reason enough to hide it, too. There is a LOT of sex in this read, but don’t let it dissuade you. The writing is fantastic, and it has a great storyline.

Mod Note: Sadly, this work will never be really completed. Scribe Mozell (real name, Fanny Feazell, died in March of 2014. She had published a first volume of the work (available on Amazon) and was editing a second volume when she passed away. I guess the work could be considered both finished and unfinished – she had a published volume, (which is very highly rated on Goodreads) but was still working on the series.

Summary: Bailey lives in a world where vampires are real, and not everyone’s happy about it, least of all him.

Because of a law introduced before his birth, Bailey is a donor, the one person from his family who has to live in a vampire’s compound, and provide them with blood. A life sentence in all but name. Bailey was eighteen when he first came to a vampire’s home, leaving his brother and sister behind, and, six years later, he hasn’t seen the outside world since.

When Bailey is bought by a rich, incredibly old vampire, and moves to a new house, he finds that not all vampires are the same, and his new boss, Cohen, is not what he’d thought him to be at all.

As Bailey begins to feel an attachment growing between him and the vampire he serves, he also becomes aware of the disappearance of donors, and witnesses hideous executions as the terrorist group The Martyred Lamb fights to eradicate vampires, and all humans who sympathise with them.

And then there’s the question of what really happened to his family…

Rec: Smbitten
Summary: Smbitten is a graphic novel about swing dancing, lesbianism, and vampirism. It was completed in the winter of 2012 by Melanie Gillman, as part of their thesis work at the Center for Cartoon Studies.

Review: This is a gorgreous comic, relatively short and sweet, with a nice story to it. It’s probably Jazz Age era, but it could be contemporary if the fiance has eccentric tastes in dress. The main character is a plump, somewhat older, white woman, engaged to a smaller, fussy man who attempts to be dominating and who has rigid ideas about what she should be doing, though he attempts, in his own odd way, to accomodate her later on. While vacationing, she meets a charming black woman who teaches her to dance the Lindy Hop in a liberating way and shows up later playing a harmonica, and who implicitly offers her freedom of a sort … maybe? And that’s all I can tell you without spoilers except it’s done in a luminous prismacolor technique.

Rec: Hunter of Demons (SPECTR #1)
Summary: Unregistered paranormal Caleb Jansen only wants a normal life. But when a demon murders his brother, Caleb knows he has to avenge Ben’s death, no matter what the cost. Unfortunately, his only allies belong to an extremist group who would kill Caleb if they found out about his talent.

Gray is a wandering spirit, summoned to hunt and destroy demons by drinking their blood. This hunt goes horribly wrong, and for the first time in his existence Gray is trapped in a living, human body. Caleb’s body…and Caleb is still in it.

Hotshot federal agent John Starkweather thinks he’s seen it all. But when he’s called to exorcise Caleb, he finds a creature which isn’t supposed to exist outside of stories. For Gray is a drakul: a vampire.

Having spent his life avoiding the government as an unregistered ‘mal, Caleb can’t let himself trust a federal exorcist, no matter how sexy. And he certainly isn’t going to give into the heat growing between them and sleep with Starkweather.

Can Starkweather win Caleb’s trust and convince him he isn’t the enemy? Can Caleb keep Gray under control, as the drakul experiences the temptation of a living body for the first time?

Because if he fails and Gray gives in to bloodlust, Starkweather will have no choice but to kill them both.

Review: Definitely recommend this series for anyone with an interest in modern paranormal themed stories. This is an AU where paranormal creatures are “out” to the general public. The SPECTR unit exists to protect people from the various demons that target humanity. Caleb falls victim to circumstances that result in being possessed by a drakul. This series has an overarching adventure plot with a unique paranormal world like none other. The romance between Caleb/Gray and John is sexy as hell, too!

Rec: Starfire
Summary: When the police rule his lover’s death a suicide, Xavier doesn’t know how to go on. But it’s not up to him. Because Al was keeping secrets, and when friends Xavier never knew about come knocking, things go from tragic to apocalyptic.

There is a war that’s been fought from the beginning of time, between gods and monsters, myths and legends. The battlefields are worlds, dimensions, the darkness between stars, space and time. Humans have never fought in this conflict, too weak to be of interest to either side.

That’s about to change.

Review: The worldbuilding in Starfire is amazing; the story involves several worlds tied together by a legend about the universe, and they all feel very distinct and believable to me. Siavahda really loves to put a lot of depth and detail into the worlds she writes and it shows in the vivid descriptions and really small details. The writing is so beautiful and I really get the sense that these are rich and complicated and real cultures especially since the POV isn’t limited to the main character. I also really like that characterization and relationships aren’t neglected in favor of plot or worldbuilding. I think Xavier is a very compelling main character–the way he processes grief and and how he manages to deal with being pulled into this conflict that he knows nothing in worlds he never knew existed really struck me.

It’s an epic fantasy with a very diverse set of characters and a plot that I can’t even begin to predict. Siavahda is one of my favorite writers and this is one of my all-time favorites. Highly recommended.

Rec: Leif & Thorn
Summary: Sparkly fantasy dramedy with magic, bilingual shenanigans, lots of queer characters, and the occasional dragon.

A team of Knights are summoned to the capitol city of Ceannis, to guard the embassy of neighboring Sønheim. Thorn is the leader of the knights. Leif prunes the embassy’s rose trees. Both jobs end up being weirder, more complicated, and more hazardous than they look.

Review: Funny, tropey, sweet, and entertaining. The worldbuilding combines standard fantasy fare (unicorns! dragonslaying! magic jewels!) with more unique flourishes – an enchanted-crystal-based equivalent of the Internet, state-sponsored magic education for wizards, a realistic language barrier that leads to comedies of mistranslation, a knight with PTSD who has a support animal in the form of a soulbonded cat.

The two title characters have an adorable slow-burn attraction developing. Their supporting cast hits other points on the LGBT+ spectrum, including an agender knight, a trans woman secret agent, and one protagonist’s two mothers. (Plus: half the cast is female, most of them belong to darker-skinned fantasy ethnicities, and more than a few of them are huge nerds.)

Storylines range from monster-of-the-week arcs, to team-bonding outings, to the one where Thorn accidentally got turned into a tentacle monster and Leif had to take care of him. (In G-rated ways. […This time.]) Mostly comedy, some action, some fluff, complete with a regular undercurrent of h/c. Everywhere it goes, it’s a good read.

Rec: The Crypt Under Shadow Avenue
Summary: Shadow Avenue had always seemed like such a quiet street during the day, and Lionel was just a lonely boy finding his place in a dull world. But after a chance encounter on a cold autumn evening, his dreary days have taken a turn for the bizarre. Now his nights are filled with all manner of monsters, and he’s become intrigued by the creatures lurking in the dark. (eventual m/m)

Review: I have been sitting on this rec for a long while now, hoping someone else would do it for me, but I just can’t wait to share it any longer. This story has been around since 2006, but I just managed to come across it a year ago while boredly scrolling through a m/m search on Fictionpress and hoping for something half-decent. Nevertheless, I was intrigued and it fast became one of my favorites as I was unable to stop reading and blazed through the chapters.

In some ways this story is reminiscent of your standard supernatural fic, with a cast of vampires, werewolves, hunters and the like, and the token human caught in the middle of it all, but how the story really shines is the author’s world-building ability. Vain Villain delves a little deeper into the supernatural genre by adding more detail and organization to the familiar (and not so familiar) supernatural creatures of lore; one of my favorites being the inclusion and description of the different Djinn clans.

Rec: Hemovore
Summary: Ten years ago, the Human Hemovore Virus blazed through the world, and left the few victims who survived unable to eat, allergic to sunlight and craving the taste of blood.

Mark Jensen used to think V-positives were incredibly sexy with their pale, flawless skin and taut, lean bodies. Not anymore. Not since he’s been stuck procuring under-the-counter feline blood for his control-freak boss, Jonathan Varga. Why cat blood? Mark has never dared to ask.

It’s not as if he’s usually at a loss for words. He can dish an insult and follow it with a snap as quick as you can say “Miss Thang”. But one look at Jonathan’s black-as-sin gypsy eyes, and Mark’s objections drain away.

So he endures their strange, endless routine: Jonathan hiding in his studio, painting solid black canvases. Mark hurling insults as he buffs the office to a shine with antiviral wipes and maps out the mysterious “routes” he’s required to drive.

Then a blurb in Art in America unleashes a chain of events neither of them saw coming. As secrets of Jonathan’s past come to light, it becomes clear all his precautions weren’t nearly enough.

Review: To be honest, I don’t actually know that much of the book anymore because it has been some time since I last read it. I remember it being very fast-paced and gripping, like JCP’s other novels, and even though vampires might be slightly annoying to readers by now, this is definitely worth a second look. It’s advertised as a “vampire thriller” and I think JCP does thriller very, very well.

Summary: “She’s dead,” I said to him harshly, and he made a tiny, breathless noise. The old man put his hand on the boy’s shoulder, and the girl gave another sob, her face crumpling like a tissue.

“But I can fix it,” I said, and smiled.

Ebron White has plenty of skeletons in his closet. Being gay in a remote ranching town is no picnic, but that’s nothing compared to Ebron’s biggest secret: he has the power to raise the dead. His life is complicated but so far he’s managing. He’s got a respectable business, an undead (though unreliable) boyfriend and most folks in his little rural community are willing to live and let live.

But a coven of witches showing up in town can only mean trouble. They’re entirely too interested in him and as the bodies pile up, Ebron is starting to realize that the dead are the least of his worries. It’s the live ones he has to survive.

Summary: Hank gets attacked by a werewolf. Ada saves her life. Hank then becomes a werewolf. Ada is a vampire. Hank discovers the underground society of vampires, werewolves and more. Ada sells weed for money, and is kind of a bounty hunter. Hank is a medical illustrator. Ada is complicated. Hank is attracted to Ada. Things get complicated. Hank is trying to adjust to her new life.

Review: Vampires and werewolves have been popular in fiction in recent years, but they tend to be overwhelmingly male. Well, maybe you want some female vampires and female werewolves. Maybe you’d like them to be into one another, too? That is what The Night Belongs to Us offers.

This one’s been going for a while and it’s a fantastic comic all round. Great art, great writing, and a plot that never gets dull. I read what’s up so far all in one go and really enjoyed it.

Rec: Blood On The Ice
Summary: The neutral zone is no place for a vampire.

A right wing for the Chicago Blackhawks, all Travis Payne wants is to see his name on the Stanley Cup. He certainly doesn’t expect to be attacked by a vampire on the eve of the Finals. But when he wakes up in the Warm Room of the Cook County Morgue, he knows his life will never be the same.

Review: Yeah, I know. I know. I. Know. In my defence, I read this on a dare, but it turned out to be so much better than I expected. First of all, abandon logic all ye who enter. Don’t ask why vampires would be playing hockey. Don’t ask what they get out of it. Don’t think about the physics. Just, don’t son. Instead, sit back and enjoy the hell out of the weird.

In saying all that, the book spends a (pleasantly) surprising amount of time on Travis’ attempts to adjust to his new vampirism and the difficulties he faces. I found myself feel bad for the guy, especially when he tries to reconnect with his human friends and team. Another surprise, the romance is pretty slow build. I mean, you know who the LI is going to be, but there’s none of that rushed “love at first sight” thing, and protracted miscommunications are nowhere to be found here.

Given this is a slash novel, there are only a handful of female characters but they’re all well written and treated with respect, which is just the cherry on top really. You don’t need to be a hockey fan to read this. Just know the very basics (three forwards, two defence, a goalie and they try to put a black plastic cylider in a goal) and that should be enough.

I can’t recall anything that was egregiously awful. Maybe a bit of bloodplay, it’s not all that fluffy (although it does have a HFN ending), and there’s some POV switching? Basically, I enjoyed it and it’s perfect for when you’re in the mood for some crack about vampires on ice.

Review: This fic’s plot goes to epic proportions to be…well epic. And it works. I really loved this fic. Almost all the characters are well rounded, even the villains are sometimes shown on a good light, or have certain reasons to drive them to do their evil deeds (aren’t evil for the heck of it). I really liked the MC and his outlook, and how he holds his own and doesn’t roll over even though he is obviously the weakest link in the entire group.

Rec: Oleander
Summary: In a bleak future where most of the world’s population lies dead, Calix Maycroft is faced with the daunting prospect of living forever. Branded a monster, and a thing of the night, Calix is stalked by the merciless ghosts of a past he’d rather forget. But the town of Oleander does not easily let go of those who once belonged to it. Hiding far away, in a different town, where people are kind, Calix is trying hard to leave the past behind him. But how long can he live with what he has done, and how long can he hide it from the only people who believe he is not a monster? Certainly not for long. And certainly not forever. Oleander will not be forgotten.

Review: I, the author (Connie Macade) have submitted this, and so as to be less biased I have asked a previous reader of my story to put together a short (and very kind) review for you good people, which is as follows:

Oleander is a brilliant, imaginitive story. I couldn’t put it down, and I loved Calix and Iden so much that I didn’t want their story to end. It’s a well paced read, full of adventure, wit and more than a little heartbreak. With flowing visuals, you almost forget you’re reading it. If you’re looking for something gripping and well-paced with great characters, this is it. It is the author’s first full length novel, and pretty impressive for a debut, in my opinion.
