Summary: He wants to take the lumps for me, but the best he can offer is to clean me up afterwards.

Review: Bo and Carlton come from abusive family backgrounds. Bo takes things into his own hands one day and breaks himself and his family free of his father’s cruelty, but will Carlton ever escape his mother’s drunken maltreatment?

Despite its “shortness” the story progresses at a satisfactory pace and gives proper closure. Also, better written than most online slash.

Note: This rec was made for an earlier version of this story. The author has since revamped it and the link leads to the new version.

Rec: The Half Bad Trilogy
Summary: Sixteen-year-old Nathan lives in a cage: beaten, shackled, trained to kill. In a modern-day England where two warring factions of witches live amongst humans, Nathan is an abomination, the illegitimate son of the world’s most terrifying and violent witch, Marcus. Nathan’s only hope for survival is to escape his captors, track down Marcus, and receive the three gifts that will bring him into his own magical powers—before it’s too late.

Review: I found this young adult series so engrossing I read both books over the course of two days, just because I couldn’t wait to find out what happens next. It’s a bit like Harry Potter meets The Hunger Games. It’s about one young person’s search and attempt to find and hold on to their identity in a dark world that would prefer that he didn’t exist. Written in the first person in a way that actually works and also means that the reader is given both a reliable and unreliable narrator, it’s an insightful commentary on the mechanisms of racism and state sanctioned violence, family, and bisexual coming of age. Nathan’s gradually developing relationship with the black witch, Gabriel, is at turns sweet and heartbreakingly epic. And the UST. Have I mentioned that? Highly recommended. Go read it and then spend your time counting down the days till March for the final book like me.

Rec: Todo Sobre mi Madre
Summary: After her son is killed in an accident, Manuela leaves Madrid for her old haunts in Barcelona. She reconnects with an old friend, a pre-op transsexual prostitute named La Agrado, who introduces her to Rosa, a young nun who turns out to be pregnant. Meanwhile, Manuela becomes a personal assistant for Huma Rojo, an actress currently playing Blanche DuBois in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire.

Review: Such a great movie. :) At the beginning it might seem a bit strange, because apparently it starts at one of the last scenes of one of the director’s other movies and actually touches the topic of organ transplantation only in the first scenes. But stay through it - as soon as Manuela is in Barcelona, the actual plot starts - still, you understand her better with the background being shown, not told, first.

What I really loved is being able to bask in the beautiful portrayel of non-sexual and sexual relationships. For me, this is the strongest part of the movie. How varied the characters and how differentiated their connections to each other.

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting the movie to be like this, or this good. I thought it would be a comedy! I watched it for class, in class, so I spent the last few minutes of the credits wiping tears away. It’s not sobbing-loudly stuff, but, well, drama, with many emotions about many sad things.

Rec: Little Complications
Summary: Danny had never found his place in the world. “Normal” is a word that has never applied. After a traumatic childhood University offers him an opportunity to break away from his small town and maybe embrace the fact that normal is highly over-rated.

Review: This story is very underappreciated on fictionpress despite being well written and touching. The first chapter is really the backstory of the main character, Danny. He’s an orphan rescued from a horrible place (where he suffered neglect and abuse). The past is hinted through the terrible state the boy is in emotionally and physically when his new family adopted him. Against all odds, and despite everything the doctors said, he finds it in himself to get better. In the second chapter we meet “present day” Danny - a very talented and charismatic 19 year old, but the past has left scars on him. He develops a relationship with Rhys, who is a lawyer and his total opposite. The rest of the story is about how they learn to love and complete each other and how they deal with their friends and families.

Contains: deaf character, scarred character, big families, art shows, coming out scenes and quite a lot of hurt/comfort.

Summary: Rich, infamous, hedonistic and dominant, Tiran Marx openly maintains a harem of submissives. By turns benevolent and ruthless, Tiran doesn’t have the patience to keep a tight rein on his subs. So he hires his friend, the proud, brittle, sometimes brutal disciplinarian, Jack Obernikoch, who takes charge with extreme prejudice. Set one or two generations the future, in a world where social norms have evolved slightly but human emotions are as confused as ever.

Review: The universe Mexta paints with the Jack Series is totally governed by dom/sub relations. Still, the point of this tale is not explicit sex scenes, but rather what those kinds of power structures do to characters feelings, and their image of self and of others. The “Jack Series” slowly and surely reveals layer upon layer of secrets and insights, all seasoned with tension and romance. Parts of it almost has a meditative feel, and that’s also when Jack’s inner journey comes through strongest. Give it time, and you will be rewarded.

Review: Don’t be turned off by my less than perfect summary and warnings. I’m really bad at that part, especially because I don’t want to spoil any of the story for you.

This is a beautifully written, deeply moving story that just grabs your heartstrings and pulls, pulls, pulls to the breaking point. Kim Chee’s character development makes you feel both the tenderness and alienation between father and son. As I read this, I couldn’t decide who is monster and who is victim. You’ll know by the end, but the imagery Kim Chee paints will make you second guess yourself. Keelain’s illustration is fabulous. You’ve got to read this!

Rec: Outgroup
Summary: - Updates Tuesdays and Fridays -

Outgroup is a story about growing up, being brave, sometimes math, and robots. Set in a world like our own plus 130 years, robots have gained sentience and are secretly building themselves with no clear motive. Obviously this is a cause of concern for humans–even the 12-year-old ones. Deadbeat moms, voice cracks, coming outs, robot takeovers, ends of friendships, and manslaughter make up the most dangerous, confusing, friggin’ sweet seventh grade year probably, like, ever. Romy, Vince, and Emil go through a lot, but I guess that’s just middle school.

Mod comments: I read this one, so I can say a few things. First of all, the art style is beautiful. It’s colourful and gives a lot of life to the characters. The story is an interesting mix of young characters being cute, family drama, and some cool and sometimes dark scifi elements. Definitely recommended.

Rec: Tutti Fruitti Rudi
Summary: This story was written for the Goodreads M/M Romance Group’s “Love’s Landscapes” event, in which writers create a story around a picture and a prompt. Rudi is a hustler and pick-pocket with a heart of gold and a baby sister to protect. Jay is a young man that Rudi rescues after Jay is attacked in a park.

Review: Rudi is an interesting and sympathetic character. The entire story is told from Rudi’s perspective, so we don’t get to know Jay as well, but Jay still manages to be more than just the boy our hero gets. The ending, however, does feel tacked on, as if the author was just writing along when she realized “Oh yeah, I’m supposed to be writing to this prompt.” She leaves the main plot hanging to send the boys off to bed. It makes for a great romantic interlude, but not a for a very satisfying ending. There is enough going on in this story to make for an entire novel; a novella just doesn’t do it justice.

Review: Ok, so I usually avoid adult/teen stories. Maybe because the real cross-generational relationships I know are pretty much destructive. However, bb_shousetsu has no warning, so I had not known…

Then I was surprised by how good the story was… I loved the whole thing but my favourite part is probably the ending. And I also adored the fact that the story deals with a dysfunctional heterosexual marriage and the wife is not described like a bitch. Instead, the feelings of the characters are captured well and are truly believable.

Also, there is a bonus to it - it is illustrated!

Summary: Alastair Sterling was the inventor who sparked the robot revolution. And because of his sudden death, he didn’t see any of it.

Until he wakes up 16 years later in an advanced robotic body that matches his old one exactly. Until he steps outside and finds a world utterly unlike the one he left behind – a world where robots live and do business alongside their human neighbors and coexist in their cities. A world he helped create.

Al seeks out his old research partner Brendan to find out if he is responsible for Al’s unexpected resurrection, but his return raises far more questions for both of them.

Like who the robot living with Brendan is. And why she looks like Al. And how much of the men’s past should stay in the past…

Review: I think I would call this one a slice-of-life drama about second chances with futuristic elements. The story so far has established a very solid beginning by delving straight into the characters, all of whom are quite likable, and the hints of the plot to come are really interesting too, though it’s quite likely that the story will stay kind of calm and heartwarming rather than action packed (not to say there isn’t the possibility, though either way, I would keep an eye on this one) and pacing and worldbuilding are really spot-on. The art may not be shiny, and the characters are probably not what most people would categorize as “hot” but there’s a depth to it that it lends to the story, and its simplicity is charming and suits the tone very well.

Summary: Barbarian swordsman Kastor Auberlane has no problem with this saving-the-world thing; it’s putting up with Mikah that’s a little hard to take.

Review: Kastor Auberlane has always been a loner and a wanderer. He’s an outcast berserker who wears black armour and dual wields magical swords, the chosen one of multiple gods who strikes fear in the hearts of nearly everyone he meets. Only, he really wishes people weren’t so afraid of him, because he’s really not that bad once you get to know him, and this whole chosen one business is nothing but trouble. He’d much rather spend his time playing bodyguard for nuns, writing poetry, knitting his own socks, and losing arguments to his horse.

These are my favourite books ever and I highly recommend them. I normally don’t reread things, but I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read these. Also, I named my cats after characters from these books, which I think is a pretty good indication of how much I enjoyed them.

Summary: A teen wondering when his chance at life will come. Taking care of his invalid mother and keeping it secret, he’s never lived for himself. Until two brothers move just across the street.

Review: I can’t adequately express how starkly beautiful this story is. It’s bleak at times, gritty, realistic and can be downright depressing. Wyatt’s life sucks and he doesn’t have a lot going for him. But the relationship that he develops with each of the brothers keeps him afloat, as does taking care of his mother. As much of a downer as this can be, there is hope. It’s not a total angst-fest. The sex scenes are realistic for two teen boys and not romanticized at all, which I find refreshing. I’m not doing this justice at all, so please give it a chance.

Rec: A Map of the Harbor Islands
Summary: This book charts the turbulent life courses of two South Boston friends, Danny O’Connor and Petey Harding, from their childhoods through their adult lives. ‘Golden Boy’ Petey has it all going for him - brains, charisma and his close friendship with Danny. Then, an accident on the baseball field changes everything. Petey wakes from a coma a different person, completely different from the boy Danny knew and loved. When Peter confesses that he is gay, it sends Danny on an odyssey he never dreamed could happen.

Review: What can I say about this book? A Map of the Harbor Islands is my favourite novel (LGBT or non LGBT related) period, and a brilliant work of literature. It is also an epic love story with a happy ending (it’s hard to find a good love story, especially a gay love story, that is both realistic and grapples with life problems in a deep way that is also ultimately happy). The way the questioning of romantic love vs. platonic friendship is explored in the novel resonated with me in particular. Also, the general feelings of outsiderness and of not having a proper model to understand their experience or how to live their lives in a way fulfilling to them that all of the characters (gay, bisexual, and straight women) contend with in the story I think is very well depicted, and Hayes has a beautiful, poetic writing style. Definitely a book that deserves to be more widely read, and a good book for wintertime curl up on the couch reading. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve reread it, but still wish I could read it again for the first time.
