Spending time with James T. Kirk is very similar, Spock imagines, to entering the event horizon of a black hole: as a casual observer, you are unaware you have been caught in its gravitational pull until it is too late to do anything about it.

(SO GOOD. Such a good canon AU, such good characters, plot, build-up of that mutual interest...what an emotionally frustrating place for it to be abandoned, but I don't regret reading it because it's excellent. I am only sad it's an abandoned WIP and the author has no other STAOS fic for me to drown my sorrows in.)

"Now. Help me to understand," Ignis says. "Your two best friends, whom you care about deeply, have begun to date."

"Yep."

"So you intend to go along with them on said dates, clandestinely monitoring every development in their courtship in order to interfere if things progress too fast for your comfort." Ignis's eyes scour the ceiling, as if trying to recall the details. "And you want me to come along."

The story follows Spock from his own days as a cadet at Starfleet Academy to the ‘present day’ when he’s Kirk’s first officer and the Enterprise is on its five-year mission. (OK, this might be the closest thing yet to my ideal K/S fic. Long and plotty, spanning years of character and plot development, seeing Spokck wrestle with his issues and grow, seeing his relationships change. The K/S takes time to get to but is so worth it. Ngl I was gonna be real salty if we didn't get what I wanted there after all the hot Spock/Pike sex, but goddamn the K/S was all the emotional slow burn I wanted, plus some fun obliviousness and jealousy, plus platonic devotion and trust. This is Jim Kirk characterization I search for: still impulsive, running on gut feelings, cheerful even despite his turbulent past and issues, but still competent, still smart, good at certain things and having to rely on others for other things, because he can't do it all himself. Fucks up. Apologizes. And what a DELIGHTFUL McCoy, seriously, and the shades of the Bones and Spock relationship is great, and Nyota is nuanced and lovely. I'm gushing, but this was plotty AND emotionally satisfying, and I rarely get both. Avoids tropey over-reliance on Spock Prime appearances, pon farr, Tarsus IV angst, etc., and has some excellent side characters filling in w/ real personalities while never losing focus on Spock as the principal actor and storyteller. I could always use more politicking -- there could be a great hypothetical sequel -- but I'm super happy with what exists.)

To pin this election on the coastal elite is a cop-out. It’s intellectually dishonest, and it’s beneath us.

We, as a culture, have to stop infantilizing and deifying rural and white working-class Americans. Their experience is not more of a real American experience than anyone else’s, but when we say that it is, we give people a pass from seeing and understanding more of their country. More Americans need to see more of the United States. They need to shake hands with a Muslim, or talk soccer with a middle aged lesbian, or attend a lecture by a female business executive.

We must start asking all Americans to be their better selves. We must all understand that America is a melting pot and that none of us has a more authentic American experience.

Jim's growing feelings for Spock during their first year serving together might actually be the worst kept secret on the ship.

(or, 5 Crew members who were aware of Jim's feelings for Spock and 1 who wasn't, at least not until after Jim died and came back to life.)

Zach gets a hideous new dog, is a super hipster, insults Chris a lot, and punches him in the solar plexus. So yeah, it's kind of unfair how much Chris is starting to be attracted to him.

In which Spock, IntraPlanet Disputes Division officer (read: space cop), is stationed in Iowa and meets Jim Kirk. And in which the stars are not Jim Kirk's first love.

Even when they hate each other, they're still sort of falling in love.

The emergency departments of hospitals are all alike. Some are small, just a couple of rooms, a bathroom, a harried nurse who greets the frequent fliers by name, and some are huge, with dozens of rooms and a team of people who don’t even know each other’s names, let alone the patients.

Per jerakeen: "Miserable real life jobs AU with a happy ending." The one where Steve is an ER doctor and Bucky is an army vet that comes in and it turns out has a bit of a history with Steve. Surprisingly, despite Bucky's past he turns out to be the better adjusted one which was refreshing. This is one of those hopeful stories that sends a message 'hey, maybe your life seems meaningless and shit, but it doesn't have to stay that way', that I enjoy reading.]
