Michael Tsai - Blog - Removed in macOS 10.14 Mojave
When Apple released iOS 11, the company removed built-in integration with Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and Vimeo, a feature that allowed iPhone and iPad users to store their third-party account information and access it within apps that needed to use those services. It means Apple no longer cares about non-retina Macs like the MacBook Air and thinks owners of those machines won’t notice rough, jagged text when they “upgrade” to Mojave. This means that apps built using OpenGL and OpenCL will still run in Mojave, but they will no longer be updated after macOS 10.14 launches. Apple didn’t kill OpenGL, it’s been dead in the water as a cross platform standard for some time. Hopefully a good, open source SDL-like wrapper that abstracts these three APIs will emerge at some point

Rentiers — Greater Fool – Authored by Garth Turner – The Troubled Future of Real Estate
I understand the reason for such a rule, to stop unscrupulous home owners from pretending to move back in to then flip the property or acquire new tenants at a higher rent price, but there has to be a fairer way to this. A million dollars invested in the TSX today buys $67k/annum of tax-paid-up income that will likely grow over time and for which there’s ample historic precedent of growth in a rising interest rate environment. Tom Davidoff, the architect of the empty home tax in BC, explains how this is the opposite of unfair, and how Vancouver zoning has punished the middle class in favor of the already rich, for no good reason other than short-sighted vote garnering. Yes well we will see what happens when the bond market collapses in a couple of years and there are NO MORE taxpayer dollars left to fund the bloated fat lazy inefficient corporation called GOVT. First we’ll approach 100% taxation due to carbon tax shortfalls, missed marijuana revenue expectations and an ever escalating civil service unfounded lianbiry and mass hiring to fudge employment numbers….and the confiscation will begin in earnest.

Michael Tsai - Blog - 10 Strikes and You’re Out
I had no idea until I looked into it last weekend, but it turns out this feature is far more clever than I realized, and it’s highly unlikely that your kids or jackass drinking buddies could ever trigger it. After the 5th failed attempt, iOS requires a 1-minute timeout before you can try again. These timeouts escalate such that it would take over 3 hours to enter 10 incorrect passcodes. It seems pretty clear from the responses to my poll that I wasn’t alone in thinking that this feature was more dangerous than it really is. I’ve got it turned on now, and I can’t think of a good reason why anyone wouldn’t enable this.

Michael Tsai - Blog - macOS 10.13.5
The only new user feature identified by Apple is Messages in iCloud, which Apple states is a feature of High Sierra only; there is no comparable option in the Sierra version of the Messages app. The High Sierra update still seems very large: its App Store download is 2.12 GB in size. You have long been able to stream to multiple speakers from the Mac, using iTunes, and that is new on iOS with AirPlay 2, but the inability for the Mac to be able to use AirPlay 2 and see a stereo pair of HomePods is surprising. iCloud sync seems completely stuck on my desktop Mac across apps. Photos stop in December 2017; iMessage sync has been running for >12 hours without any visible progress.

Should You Ride an Electric Scooter? - The Atlantic
In ancient, barbaric days when local vassals managed petite armies, brute knights often swept into villages, declaring the inhabitants subject to new laws and new lords before riding off again with the changing of the season. In a mad bid for market share, the start-ups behind the scooters had dumped thousands of them on city sidewalks, frustrating San Francisco’s cyclists and terrorizing its wretched NIMBYs. A worrying story, certainly, but the threat seemed distant until this April when I spotted a scooter in my neighborhood in Washington, D.C. Hoofing it to the subway one morning, I caught its silhouette out of the corner of my eye: unused, teetering, a putrescent green. They take a number of manufacturing advances made possible by the global smartphone industry—smaller and cheaper cell antennas, GPS chips, and electric batteries—and apply them in a novel and useful way, and in a surprisingly good way . She explained this at the time and I remember feeling an immense surge of gratitude—and a confusion that my parents and grandparents would arrange for something so outlandishly kind, so cool-for-cool’s-sake, to be done just for me .

The Oxygen of Amplification | Data & Society
The Oxygen of Amplification: Better Practices for Reporting on Extremists, Antagonists, and Manipulators Online draws on in-depth interviews by scholar Whitney Phillips to showcase how news media was hijacked from 2016 to 2018 to amplify the messages of hate groups.

Offering extremely candid comments from mainstream journalists, the report provides a snapshot of an industry caught between the pressure to deliver page views, the impulse to cover manipulators and “trolls,” and the disgust (expressed in interviewees’ own words) of accidentally propagating extremist ideology.

After reviewing common methods of “information laundering” of radical and racist messages through the press, Phillips uses journalists’ own words to propose a set of editorial “better practices” intended to reduce manipulation and harm.

Daring Fireball: Robinson Meyer: 'Unfortunately, the Electric Scooters Are Fantastic'
Robinson Meyer: ‘Unfortunately, the Electric Scooters Are Fantastic’ Robinson Meyer, writing for The Atlantic: When this latest army invaded my village, it seemed no different
than the rest. I had heard rumor of it for weeks, had feared and
resented it, had assured friends that its occupation would end as
soon as all its predecessors. But when its foot soldiers finally
arrived, I was shocked to find myself charmed. I speak, of course, of the electric scooters.

Daring Fireball: 10 Strikes and You’re Out — the iOS Feature You’re Probably Not Using But Should
I’ve long been intrigued by this setting, but never turned it on, out of the vague fear that something could happen and I’d wind up with a wiped iPhone. Say, if a “friend” surreptitiously took my phone at a bar and entered 10 wrong passcodes as a prank. I had no idea until I looked into it last weekend, but it turns out this feature is far more clever than I realized, and it’s highly unlikely that your kids or jackass drinking buddies could ever trigger it. It seems pretty clear from the responses to my poll that I wasn’t alone in thinking that this feature was more dangerous than it really is. I’ve got it turned on now, and I can’t think of a good reason why anyone wouldn’t enable this.

CNN's Anthony Bourdain dead at 61 - CNN
His close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a survey Thursday showing suicide rates increased by 25% across the country over nearly two decades ending in 2016. Chef and writer Edward Lee, who hosted a season of a show produced by Bourdain, looked back at their time working together and wrote that "Tony gave us a world that we didn't know we needed." Bourdain grew up in Leonia, New Jersey, and started working in kitchens in his teens -- including on Massachusetts' Cape Cod during the summer. First, he hosted "A Cook's Tour" on the Food Network, then moved to the Travel Channel with "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations," a breakout hit that earned two Emmy Awards and more than a dozen nominations.

Canada now has better data on skills and labour market outcomes than ever. Why is it so hard to use it? | The Mowat Centre
This is the reality faced by researchers and government officials looking to understand whether our secondary and postsecondary education system is providing students with the skills they need to succeed in the economy of tomorrow. And it requires samples large enough that the effects of other variables potentially affecting labour market outcomes – for example, whether one got married and has kids, or encountered health problems – can be statistically accounted for. Skills also enable citizens to interact effectively together and with their public institutions to address an increasingly complex array of local, regional, national and global challenges. Accessing the linked PIAAC and LISA data is the key to better understanding how education, skills and labour market outcomes interact in Canada, and how to maximize their societal impact going forward. Its purpose is to access, analyze and mobilize data relating to the education, skills and labour market outcomes of Canadians, and to disseminate the findings to inform policy development.

Research Initiative on Education + Skills | The Mowat Centre
Its purpose is to access, analyze and mobilize data relating to the education, skills and labour market outcomes of Canadians, and to disseminate the findings to inform policy development. Use the data to produce a series of studies by both internal and external researchers on key policy issues relating to the education, skills and labour market outcomes of Canadians. An international programme of assessment of adult skills and competencies initiated by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and administered between 2011 and 2016 in 34 countries. A longitudinal survey conducted every two years since 2012 that collects information from 24,000 adult Canadians, including 8,500 PIAAC respondents, about their jobs, education, health and family, and how changes in these areas affect different aspects of their lives. Results from LISA can be linked to the direct measures of skills conducted through PIAAC for those respondents who are included in both surveys.
