Hackerkey v4
The Hacker Key Guide was inspired by Robert Hayden's excellent Geek Code which has been a long time hacker favorite. However, the Geek Code has not been updated in a long time, and although the commercialization of the Internet has washed away much of the old hacker environment (MUDs, BBSes, DOS...), we must attempt to keep hacker traditions alive, by reimplementation if needed.

A view from the cycle path: electric cars
It made me think: what exactly have we bought today ? Our tank full of fuel came to a bit more than 36 and a half litres. 36.5 l of petrol weighs about 26 kg. Burning that one tank full of petrol will put about 84 kg, a little more than my own weight, of CO2 into the air. That's the effect from just one tank full of petrol, which according to the manufacturer is supposed to be enough to drive around 500 km.

Petrol is amazing stuff. It has an energy content of 9.7 kWh per litre, so today we bought 355 kWh of energy for our 53 euros. The car consumes about 0.7 kWh produces 0.17 kg of CO2 per km driven.

A few years back, someone who set a world record by cycling over 1000 km in 24 hours calculated that his average power output was about 115 W for the entire 24 hours. That's someone at the absolute peak of what is possible, and his body generated about 2.7 kWh over a 24 hour period.

In light of this, I think it's reasonable to say that an averagely strong person doing an 8 hour shift at a physically demanding job would expend no more than 1 kWh per day at work, so we could say that in our tank full of petrol we've bought the equivalent of someone working hard nearly every day for an entire year, including weekends and almost all holidays. This cost just 53 euros. That really is a bargain.

Why Mastodon is defying the “critical mass” – Peter O'Shaughnessy – Medium
More recently, an article about Mastodon’s wider ecosystem — termed “the fediverse” — made it to the front page of Hacker News: “What is ActivityPub, and how will it change the internet?” , by Jeremy Dormitzer. Jeremy makes a fair point that most instances are “built and run by volunteers with tiny budgets”, but he implies that this must change, whereas most of the Mastodon admins and users I know are quite happy with this model, which frees us from the vested and contradictory interests of advertisers. Despite the sharp increases and declines with each new wave of users from Twitter, the overall trajectory is up , and that’s what matters — not the speed of the growth, nor reaching some level of critical mass. We just aren’t built to handle empathy and sympathy on that scale.” For me, Mastodon provides a happy medium ground between the intimate conversations of, say, WhatsApp groups, and the serendipitous potential of Twitter for discovering new people and content. Any app that implements ActivityPub becomes part of a massive social network, one that conserves user choice and tears down walled gardens.

Apple, Netflix Reshaping Studio Hierarchy with Paramount, A24 Deals | Hollywood Reporter
That’s because the square-jawed heartthrob’s teen romantic comedy for Netflix, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before , is pointing the way toward a new hierarchy in Hollywood, one in which the 106-year-old studio behind movies like The Godfather and Transformers produces original films for a streaming service. A day earlier, A24, the 6-year-old independent-minded company behind such art-house hits as Lady Bird , Hereditary , Moonlight and Eighth Grade , signed its own deal to produce a slate of films for Apple. The deals are a reaction to 2018’s seismic changes — Disney’s acquisition of Fox assets, AT&T’s of Time Warner and the announcement of the streaming services both companies intend to launch. Some potential sellers have mixed feelings about Paramount’s new arrangement, seeing it less as a savvy solution for a studio en route to profitability after years on its heels and more as a last gasp. "Apple is projecting an aesthetic by committing first to A24," says Jason Squire, author of The Movie Business Book and professor at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.
