The three-party system in Australia — Crooked Timber
Parties happen because they work. You plop dozens to hundreds of unaffiliated members down in a parliament and each of them will quickly find that alone, as one of so many, they don’t have any pull. But look, there are fifty others here who have similar views to me and/or represent pretty much the same interests. Maybe those of us who represent rural districts with farming as the most important economic factor can have a regular lunch together and discuss how to coordinate to help our farmers? Boom, party. Then the others have to do the same to even the playing field again.

This is one of those areas where things are the way they are not because everybody was silly or malicious, but because everybody took the logical next step, and then the next, and so on. A new set of people would merely recapitulate the very same steps.

Android Developers Blog: Google Play services discontinuing updates for API levels 14 and 15
Google Play services discontinuing updates for API levels 14 and 15
06 December 2018
Posted by Sam Spencer, Technical Program Manager, Google Play

The Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) platform is seven years old and the active device count has been below 1% for some time. Consequently, we are deprecating support for ICS in future releases of Google Play services. For devices running ICS, the Google Play Store will no longer update Play Services APK beyond version 14.7.99.

What does this mean a...

The Effect of Media Coverage on Mass Shootings | IZA - Institute of Labor Economics
"Can media coverage of shooters encourage future mass shootings? We explore the link between the day-to-day prime time television news coverage of shootings on ABC World News Tonight and subsequent mass shootings in the US from January 1, 2013 to June 23, 2016. To circumvent latent endogeneity concerns, we employ an instrumental variable strategy: worldwide disaster deaths provide an exogenous variation that systematically crowds out shooting-related coverage. Our findings consistently suggest a positive and statistically significant effect of coverage on the number of subsequent shootings, lasting for 4-10 days. At its mean, news coverage is suggested to cause approximately three mass shootings in the following week, which would explain 55 percent of all mass shootings in our sample. Results are qualitatively consistent when using (i) additional keywords to capture shooting-related news coverage, (ii) alternative definitions of mass shootings, (iii) the number of injured or killed people as the dependent variable, and (iv) an alternative, longer data source for mass shootings from 2006-2016."

4K is the way of the future. Despite its slow consumer-level growth over the last five or so years, we're starting to see more and more 4K HDR content, and therefore, more and more consoles, platforms, and services are showing support.
