Watch Pearl Jam Dedicate Tour Kickoff to Anthony Bourdain | Music News | Consequence of Sound
Ever classy, the Seattle rockers also paid respects to the Spade family
Pearl Jam is a class act. Listen to any number of bootlegs from the Seattle rockers and you’ll see that Eddie Vedder and the gang have their hearts in the right place. Well, traditions die hard, and last night, the band came out in a state of love and trust for their European tour kick off at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam with a few dedications.
“We dedicate this to Anthony [Bourdain], my friend David [Spade], his brother Andrew [Spade],” Vedder said, the latter two being the brother-in-law and husband, respectively, of designer Kate Spade. “They are deep in our hearts tonight and we thank you.”

As Ant Financial Rises, So Does China | PYMNTS.com
The recent $14 billion worth of fresh capital for Ant Financial — the China-based firm that is now the most valuable privately held tech firm in the world, ahead of Uber — comes amid fresh fears among some banking professionals in the West that China is passing them by. Will China follow the United Kingdom and the United States as the leader of payment services and FinTech?

That’s hardly a new question. But it has gained new focus, according to a recent article from Bloomberg that notes the increasing popularity and power of payments conducted through Alipay and WeChat.

Ads need to be the product of more than just digital data
The same logic suggests that most digital ads are ignored. They are often so badly produced that, even if seen, they would reduce rather than increase the goodwill about the brand. There are many cases where digital ads work brilliantly, but this is not the case for all brands, all products and in all contexts.

What digital has done well is have enough of a data trail to claim, not create, success. If I really love Aesop shampoo, and I’ve such an empty and pointless life to follow the brand on Facebook, at some point in time when I haplessly buy it from somewhere, someone’s going to have enough data to show that the Facebook follow made me buy it.

Where To Stream 'Bao', The Pixar Short Before 'Incredibles 2' That'll Make You Totally Tear Up
With each new Pixar movie comes a new Pixar short, and sometimes it's hard to be sure which one is more exciting. The good news is that you don't have to choose one to watch, and the studio's new animated short, Bao, is almost as exciting as the movie it precedes.

Agencies must evolve to back up their creativity with data and tech
Marketing chiefs are now making as many technical decisions as marketing calls, according to Michael Kassan, chairman and chief executive of media advisory business Medialink. “They can’t just identify a good storyline; they have to match it up with the data and technology, and deliver it,” he says. To this end, it is no longer enough for partner agencies to develop a strong narrative and produce great creative; they also need to advise brands on the data that informs the concept, as well as the right platform and metrics.

As Joy Bhattacharya, UK and Ireland managing director at Accenture’s agency wing Accenture Interactive, says: “The lines are blurring as the need to offer creative, technology, design and consulting within the same four walls becomes more of an imperative. Everyone, whether agency or consultancy, is approaching it in different ways to provide a holistic solution. Chief marketing officers (CMOs) now have the chance to think in a different way about what those goals could be, which will be very empowering.”

Six sigma events / by John [Cook] (John D Cook Consulting, 2018/06/14)
“Now suppose you’ve seen an observation greater than 6. The Bayes factor in favor of the t distribution hypothesis is 272. This means that even though before seeing any data you thought the odds were 99 to 1 in favor of the data coming from a normal distribution, after seeing such a large observation you would put the odds at 272 to 1 in favor of the t distribution.

“If you allow a small possibility that your assumption of a normal distribution is wrong (see Cromwell’s rule) then seeing an extreme event will radically change your mind. You don’t have to think the heavier-tailed distribution is equally likely, just a possibility. If you did think a priori that both possibilities were equally likely, the posterior odds for the t distribution would be 27,000 to 1.”

Looking for Life on a Flat Earth | The New Yorker
What a burgeoning movement says about science, solace, and how a theory becomes truth.
On the last Sunday afternoon in March, Mike Hughes, a sixty-two-year-old limousine driver from Apple Valley, California, successfully launched himself above the Mojave Desert in a homemade steam-powered rocket. He’d been trying for years, in one way or another. In 2002, Hughes set a Guinness World Record for the longest ramp jump—a hundred and three feet—in a limo, a stretch Lincoln Town Car. In 2014, he allegedly flew thirteen hundred and seventy-four feet in a garage-built rocket and was injured when it crashed. He planned to try again in 2016, but his Kickstarter campaign, which aimed to raise a hundred and fifty thousand dollars, netted just two supporters and three hundred and ten dollars. Further attempts were scrubbed—mechanical problems, logistical hurdles, hassles from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Finally, a couple of months ago, he made good. Stuff was leaking, bolts needed tightening, but at around three o’clock, and with no countdown, Hughes blasted off from a portable ramp—attached to a motorhome he’d bought through Craigslist—soared to nearly nineteen hundred feet, and, after a minute or so, parachuted less than gently back to Earth.
