Excellent news for #Cullman & #Decatur! The cities have been awarded a total of $28.2 million in @USDOT BUILD grant funding for highway infrastructure improvements. Looking forward to continuing to prioritize Alabama's #infrastructure needs.

In Way Too Little We Trust - Adam Garfinkle, The American Interest, Dec 2017
Via Pierre-Yves Saintoyant

"The essence of all this is that people who share common mazeways from having lived together and been socialized generation to generation can anticipate what others are up to, and the result is a network or web of reciprocal shared expectations."

"The ballast provided by social trust enables a relatively light-handed government to do for a collection of communities in a larger country only what they cannot readily do for themselves."

"... seven factors [my numbering]— [1] immigration-driven heterogeneity, [2] the decline of traditional religious mores and related informal norms, [3] technology-driven isolation, [4] the backwash of institutional dysfunction and elite dethronement, [5] the media-driven “mean world syndrome,” [6] family instability and breakdown, and [7] the excessive intrusiveness of the state"

"This suggests that, however the problem arose, the decline of social trust has taken on a downward-spiraling life of its own, generating not only a compounding lack of trust but also an ambient pessimism about the future. So we have not just a problem, but a problem set defined by these seven causal elements."

"If we are driven nearly berserk politically by current levels of labor displacement—and we are—we will clearly enter the domain of full-frontal social unsustainability if the challenge more than quadruples in a single generation. And yet at present there is absolutely zero prospect that the American political class will do anything about this. Some people are terrified about what a rising deficit could mean, but compared to the existential threat to social order posed by an automation-driven political economy derangement of this magnitude, the deficit problem, serious as it is, seems like no more than a bad hangnail."

‘The elephant in the room’: How the Raptors can improve their defensive rebounding – The Athletic [subscription]
More from Ibaka and Siakam in the starting unit

Ibaka is undoubtedly having a very good season for the Raptors, but if there’s one aspect the team would like to see improve, it’s his rebounding. It has perennially been a weakness for him so there may not be much room for growth, but he currently ranks in the 43rd percentile among big men in defensive rebounding rate. Valanciunas is in the 89th percentile, per Cleaning the Glass, and the starting lineup with either of them at centre has resulted in sub-70 per cent rebound rates.

The Raptors rank third in fastbreak points at 18.6 per game and so asking Siakam to do less leaking out and getting in the mix for the rebound more often could be a big fix. Siakam is in the 33rd percentile of big men when it comes to rebounding and has shown the propensity to lead effective fastbreaks when he does collect the board anyway.

“I don’t think it’s leaking out, I don’t think, maybe sometimes,” Nurse said. “We do get some leak-out baskets but I would like to believe that’s more from an earnest effort to run the floor. You know, Pascal gets out there, and he’s probably been caught leaking out a couple times, too, but not very much.”

Bench boards

While the productivity of the bench unit has improved of late, their rebounding has left plenty to be desired. On the season, they are collecting just 55.1 per cent of the defensive rebounds available to them, and while the sample size is just 40 minutes, the eye test shows they aren’t ganging up on the boards as necessary with two point guards and two wings.

Valanciunas has done a tremendous job of gobbling up everything in sight of late, but OG Anunoby, C.J. Miles, VanVleet and Delon Wright have been horrendous in helping out. Miles and Anunoby have been the biggest culprits, placing in the sixth and second percentile, respectively, in defensive rebounding percentage among forwards.

Recognizing matchups where two bigs are beneficial

While maximizing switchability and spacing is well suited for today’s NBA and against most teams, there are times when the opponents throw that happy equilibrium out the window with their size or the Raptors themselves aren’t taking advantage of their spacing and knocking down shots. So, perhaps on a night against the Nuggets where the Raptors are in the midst of shooting 3-for-21 from three in the first half or Denver turns to two bigs in Nikola Jokic and Mason Plumlee, playing two bigs can be beneficial in this regard for the Raptors.
