Introduction - 10,000 Year Clock - The Long Now
Almost any kind of artifact can last 10 millennia if stored and cared for properly. We have examples of 5,000-year-old wood staffs, papyrus, or leather sandals. On the other hand, even metal can corrode in a few years of rain. For longevity a 10K year environment is more important than the artifact’s material. The mountain top in Texas (and Nevada) is a high dry desert, and below, in the interior tunnel, the temperature is very even over seasons and by the day (55 degrees F) – another huge plus for longevity since freeze-thaw cycles are as corrosive as water. Dry, dark and stable temperatures are what archivists love. It’s an ideal world for a ceaseless Clock.

Impact of Social Sciences – Linguistic analysis reveals the hidden details of research grant proposal peer review reports
Despite peer review panels being the most common way of selecting applicants for research funding, little is known about how selections are made. New methods for large-scale text analysis allow for review panels’ written reports to be analysed and studied for patterns.

Dogecoin's price is soaring while the rest of crypto crumbles — Quartz
The strongest cryptocurrency right now is a total joke https://ift.tt/2x719x5 Prospective https://ift.tt/2N6w86H September 12, 2018 at 02:12PM

As crypto crumbles, Dogecoin rises.

Over the past there months, Dogecoin—a cryptocurrency created in 2013 as a joke—has roughly doubled in value. The digital token, which its own creator still dismisses as ridiculous, inexplicably claims a $740 million market cap and an average daily trading volume worth millions of dollars. In recent weeks the bottom has fallen out in the markets for bitcoin, ether, and other crypto assets; ether has fallen by around 70% over the past three months against the dollar.

Dogecoin gets its name from the quizzical Shiba Inu dog that launched a thousand memes. According to CoinMarketCap, it primarily trades against the US dollar Tether on two exchanges, ZB.com (based in China) and Gate.io (which appears to be based in the Cayman Islands). Although Dogecoin is the 17th-largest cryptocurrency by market value, its originator—Jackson Palmer, a product manager at Adobe—is far from impressed.

Despite its jokey origins, crypto hobbyists have found whizzy technical ways to connect Dogecoin to Ethereum, using the coin to experiment with the interoperability of crypto assets more broadly. Palmer says, however, that this “provides no usefulness or cost efficiency” versus other ways to exchange digital assets across blockchains. “I find it kind of disappointing that good developers are spending time/energy building and reviewing these insanely complicated crypto Rube Goldberg machines when nobody is using Dapps [decentralized applications] and commerce adoption of cryptocurrency continues to decrease,” he tweeted recently.

He may be right, but never underestimate the market for cute dogs, in the real world or on the blockchain.

FDA and USDA will meet to debate the future of lab-grown meat
FDA and USDA will meet to debate the future of lab-grown meat https://ift.tt/2xb2bHy Prospective https://ift.tt/2NCMYcv September 12, 2018 at 02:12PM

PixaBay

It's inevitable that lab-grown meat will play some kind of role in the future of food supply, but at this stage, it's unclear how much of a role, or what its regulatory frameworks will look like. This is why the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and US Department of Agriculture (USDA) are hosting a joint public meeting on the issue, to address public concerns about cell-cultured meat products and to examine how they will fit into existing food systems.

Taking place on October 23rd – 24th, the meeting will discuss potential hazards, production, regulation and labelling, the latter of which is particularly contentious at the moment. If it's decided that lab-grown meat will be called meat, it'll be regulated by the USDA. If it's not allowed to be called meat, it'll be looked after by the FDA. This particular dilemma hit the headlines in August when lawmakers in Missouri ruled that such products cannot be called meat within the state (with violators facing large fines and imprisonment).

Other states are yet to enact their own legislation, although the FDA/USDA meeting may well help to create a more coherent, nationwide rulebook. Industry representatives and consumer groups are invited to participate in the meeting, although anyone who wishes to submit comments about the issue can do so up until November 26, via the regulations.gov site.

Digital | Children's Commissioner for England
We will also extend our campaigning on children’s digital lives to shine a light on the multiple ways in which children’s data is given away, sold and used; and campaign for greater transparency and decent policies to protect children from digital profiling which might negatively affect them in future. We are planning to produce a guide this year for schools and parents to demonstrate the ways in which children’s data is used and sold, and how it may be used in future.

China Passenger Vehicle Sales Down for Second Month in August - Caixin Global
Falling consumer confidence may have been the main reason for the sluggish performance, said Xu Haidong, the association’s assistant secretary-general. In smaller Chinese cities, where most sales growth originates, demand from consumers who tend to be more price-sensitive have plummeted, Xu said.
