[Watsonian, Doylist, Thermian Argument]
[hey folks, I’m gonna introduce you to two very important fandom terms and they are watsonian and doylist]

"Related, see the “Thermian Argument,” another term for the use of in-world (Watsonian) justifications for out-of-world (Doylist) criticism, especially of the "but it’s because she breathes through her skin!” variety.

But I disagree with that last point; there is a hierarchy of argument, or maybe a lowerarchy.

I agree that a Doylist critique of a Watsonian justification–throwing the wet blanket of “it’s bad writing” onto someone’s “here’s my elaborate justification for a plot hole” explanation–is a dick move. It’s mean and people shouldn’t do that.

But at the same time, a Watsonian defense of a Doylist objection–especially a Thermian Argument defense of critique–is harmful. It makes excuses for, not just sloppy or bad writing, but writing that reinforces gatekeeping, and excuses creators for their biases."
