Decentralisation: the next big step for the world wide web
The decentralised web, or DWeb, could be a chance to take control of our data back from the big tech firms. So how does it work and when will it be here?

Oral History of Kenneth Kocienda and Richard Williamson, part 1 - YouTube
Favorite tweet:

If you haven't yet carved out six hours to watch/listen to @kocienda and Richard Williamson talk about the development of WebKit & iPhone for @ComputerHistory, it's well-worth it, and a great counterpart to @kocienda's new book https://t.co/FIPh39Rovk

NetNewsWire
Major bandwidth-use bug fixed — sometimes it would request the home page of a site multiple times all at once. When I turned NetNewsWire over to Black Pixel in 2011, I included a big list of features I was thinking about for future versions. Back in those early days of OS X it was pretty common to put the word “Aqua” or “Cocoa” in your Mac app’s name. The Combined View and tabbed browser aren’t great, but you could use the code as a starting place, at least. Timeline: fixed bug where mark-as-read from the contextual menu would actually mark older as read.

inessential: NetNewsWire History
On the NetNewsWire blog I’ve been publishing bits of NetNewsWire history. It’s a look at the history of our industry through the eyes of one single 16-year-old app. It’s easier to use than my own software — especially when it comes to adding pictures, and I definitely want to use a lot of screenshots on this blog. I set it up to automatically cross-post to @NetNewsWire on Twitter. I don’t love Twitter, obviously, but I feel it’s important, when you have a product, even a free one, to be accessible wherever the users are.

We've had a problem over the years that our Backup on Connect LaunchAgent produces a ton of logging after a drive is attached and a copy is running. Back when we originally noticed the problem, over 5 years ago, we "fixed" it by adjusting ThrottleInterval to 0 (found experimentally at the time). It had no negative effects, but the problem came back later and I never could understand why...certainly, it didn't make sense based on the man page, which says: The only thing I could come up with was that there must be a weird bug in WatchPaths where under some conditions, it would trigger on writes to child folders, even though it was documented not to. The problem is what the man page isn't saying, but is implied in the last part--"jobs should linger around just in case they are needed again"--is the key.

the ring of the ancestors is not a euphemism - kellifer_fic - Teen Wolf (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Stiles hadn't noticed the way the entire commissary had gone silent when the guy had approached his table, or the two military escorts that had been flanking him, looking at each other like maybe they should be intervening but weren't sure how. All he saw was someone stealing the last dessert from him and Stiles didn't think about it, he just reached across the table and snatched it back with a, "What the hell, dude?"

September 9, 2018 So, fun fact for all of you history dorks, but you know that legend about Cleopatra being so rich and trashy that she would drink her wine with crushed up pearls in it? Pearls are mostly Calcium Carbonate. When they mix with acids (such as those in wine) they produce carbon dioxide like little balls of fancy alkaseltzer. What Im saying is, call Cleopatra a trashy hoe all you want, but she was the trashy hoe who invented instant champagne. Octavius payed you to write this post

Realtors behaving badly — Greater Fool – Authored by Garth Turner – The Troubled Future of Real Estate
In yet another indictment of an industry which sells emotion, greed and avarice, plus taking full advantage of uninformed, unsophisticated investors, Mr. Chin this last week sent out an email blast for a condo development about to be built in a dead bread factory on a dodgy street. “As my clients know,” he writes, “I have been selling and advocating for pre-con in Leslieville hard since 2014 and I’ve personally bought into pre-construction condos at Riverside Square and 875 Queen Street. By agreeing to an extension Marlene altered the terms of the original contract, opening herself up to action because her listing agreement stated she was liable to pay commission, “upon acceptance of a satisfactory offer, even if the deal doesn’t close.” The realtor in question claims that Marlene’s action in altering the contractual agreement (by allowing an extension) prevented what might have been a satisfactory offer from being consummated. First, you (the buyer) could be liable for the entire commission on the purchase of a home if the vendor decides not to pay, if there is a dispute over the amount, or full payment is not made at the time of closing for whatever reason. Third, if you (the buyer) enter into an agreement to buy a house, then get cold feet and back out, or decide you can’t actually afford it, or face certain death from your spouse if you complete the deal, you’re screwed.
