Amazon.com: Big Game: The NFL in Dangerous Times (9780399185427): Mark Leibovich: Books
“The high point of any monster movie, whether you’re talking “King Kong” or “Jurassic Park,” comes at the moment when you finally get a full view of the giant beast. You’ve caught a glimpse or two, heard a roar in the distance, but when you finally see the monster’s full immensity, it’s a sight to behold … and you wonder how in the hell your little heroes are going to survive its fury Big Game: The NFL in Dangerous Times, an exceptional new behind-the-scenes book by Mark Leibovitch, is a monster movie disguised as investigative journalism. Running from 2014 right on up to this year, Leibovitch’s narrative presents the NFL’s owners and commissioner in all their bumbling, well-meaning, self-serving, self-satisfied glory … and shows in high definition how unprepared they were for the monster that stomped in to demolish everything they hold dear.” — Yahoo Sports

Charges Dropped Against UCLA Professor In Deadly Lab Fire
LOS ANGELES, CA — Criminal charges stemming from a 2008 laboratory fire that killed a research assistant were dismissed against a UCLA chemistry professor last week, nine months earlier than expected and over the objection of prosecutors, the District Attorney's Office confirmed Tuesday.

Patrick Harran entered into a five-year deferred-prosecution agreement with the District Attorney's Office in 2014. Under the agreement, Harran was ordered to meet a series of requirements, including 800 hours of non- teaching community service at the UCLA Hospital System/UCLA Health Services.

Although that agreement was not scheduled to end until next June, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge George Lomeli ruled during a hearing last Thursday that Harran had already met all the terms of the agreement, and he dismissed the criminal case against him, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Greg Risling, spokesman for the District Attorney's Office, said prosecutors objected to the dismissal, which was granted "nine months earlier when the case was set to be dismissed."

Harran, who still works at UCLA, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Vicious Rumors Spread Like Wildfire On WhatsApp — And Destroyed A Village
In attempting to fulfill Facebook’s current mission — to “give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together” — Zuckerberg and his team of Silicon Valley–based executives failed to foresee its malignant applications: misinformation, propaganda, rumor, hate. On July 3, two days after the fatal beatings in Rainpada, India’s Information Technology Ministry released a public statement calling the “irresponsible and explosive messages filled with rumors and provocation” on WhatsApp a matter of deep concern. For years, the thousand people in this hamlet nestled at the western edge of Dhule — a district that India’s government counts among the country’s most underdeveloped — have led a simple existence, eking out a living by selling maize to wholesalers in the nearest small town. Hundreds of miles away as young people in India’s cities post Instagram stories from trendy lounges and throbbing discotheques, the village youngsters create their own digital watering holes atop these hills with their cheap Android phones and inexpensive prepaid data plans with dozens of gigabytes. In her view, the original product was developed “to remove all friction from sharing” without prompts to “contextualize or comment” on forwarded content, a dangerous precedent that — when put in an environment where people are less educated, less experienced about the web — can have dire consequences.

Data Migrations for NoSQL with Curator
The NoSQL movement has brought us a wave of new data stores beyond the traditional relational databases. These data stores come with their own tradeoffs, but they provide some incredible benefits.

One great feature of relational databases, however, is the consistency in the shape of the data. You know if you have a people table, every row has the same columns. Furthermore, if you want to rename or modify a column, it's a simple operation. We lose this ability most NoSQL databases. We can easily add attributes (columns), but we cannot easily rename them or change the data within each document (row).

Since apps are always evolving, we needed a way for our data to keep up with our code. Our solution is something we're calling lazy data migrations.

Local fire departments battling fires and cancer
A fire scene can be dangerous enough with the fire and the smoke.

Now add in potentially cancer-causing materials, and you've got a hot mess.

According to a study done by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health firefighters showed a higher rate of certain types of cancers than other people.

With the fact in mind, fire chiefs like West Ridge Chief, Dan Ouellet do everything they can to prevent any toxic material from seeping in.

They wear breathing masks and protective clothing and try to wash their gear afterward.

Investigation: New condos aren't owned by San Francisco residents | 48 hills
According to supply and demand theory, projects like The Brannan and Millennium Tower add to the total stock of housing, and should help to ease prices across the overall housing market by satiating the demand of high-income San Franciscans for space in the city.

But rather than satisfy some demand for housing at the top of the market and alleviating the city’s affordability crisis, San Francisco’s luxury condos instead are being purchased by wealthy buyers who have a virtually bottomless appetite for super-exclusive real estate. Many of these buyers don’t live in San Francisco; their city condos are second, or third homes, a 48 hills analysis of property records shows.

We reviewed Assessor’s Office records for 5,212 condos in 23 buildings, most built after the year 2000, all of them market-rate residences. We found that absentee owners control approximately 2,034 of these condos – about 39 percent of the total. (We identified absentee owners as having a listed address that is different than the condo residence.)

In some building, the number of absentee owners is above 60 percent.
