Bank of the West to use voice biometrics for fraud detection
San Francisco-headquarted Bank of the West, a subsidiary of BNP Paribas, will begin using machine learning-powered voice biometric technology to better safeguard its customers against fraud and to boost its KYC protocol. AI specialist Pindrop will provide technology that promises to identify issues such as Caller ID spoofing, voice distortion and social engineering. "Pindrop's machine learning technology allows us to better know our customers and more effectively protect their assets", said Patricia Nowak, head of enterprise customer experience for Bank of the West.

US regulator: phoney bank accounts not a 'systemic' issue
review by the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) into 40 banks has found that the problem of fake accounts is not a widespread issue for the industry. Two years ago, Wells Fargo's sales culture gained national headlines when it was found that several million phoney accounts, many of which carried unwarranted fees, had been set up without people's consent. Worryingly, though, the investigation did uncover a few instances of fake accounts at some lenders as well as weaknesses in internal sales practices — although the OCC clarified that these unauthorised accounts didn't seem to have been opened in order to meet any sales quotas.

UK: MPs question TSB chief's future
The fallout from the TSB IT meltdown continues today as the position of chief executive Paul Pester is being questioned by British lawmakers [FT paywall] — one day after he answered questions about the catastrophe at a parliamentary committee. According to the Financial Times, a letter from the chair of the committee to the bank said that it "has lost confidence in his ability to provide a full and frank assessment of the problems at TSB, and to deal with them in the best interests of its customers". However, the firm responded saying that it still has full faith in Mr Pester to carry out his role effectively, despite the bank being subjected to a higher level of cybersecurity incidents than normal.
