Japanese Women Rule the Roost: Wives More Likely to Run Family Households
According to a survey by Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance, the wife is the leader in the majority (51.6%) of married couples in Japan.,The wife tends to take charge in household finances, childcare and education, and housework.,Kodama Yūichi, the chief economist at Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance, commented, “While men’s attitudes play their part, the idea of the husband as the breadwinner and the wife as the homemaker is based in the Japanese employment practices of being unable to decline overtime or job relocations, and is a deep-rooted vestige of the Japan of yesteryear.,While 45.7% of husbands answered “nothing in particular” when asked about causes for complaint, this was true for just 24% of wives.,The top three reasons (multiple answers allowed) cited by the wives for dissatisfaction were “Not thoughtful” (26.7%), “Not cooperative in housework” (20.5%), and “Not organized” (17.9%).

The Many Futures of a Decision
From that point of view, Brexit, for example, is not a decision with a virtual ethical future, but a decision about future events that will be actualised once we pass them on the line.,Against this, Lampert's key move is to refocus us on decisions understood as phenomena that allow us to deduce properties of time, rather than rely on prior assumptions about the linearity or determined nature of time and the future, and then insert the idea of a decision within them.,At that point we should think of the future and of the ethics of the decision as about many interconnected virtual futures.,Lampert also includes valuable counter-points to the continental tradition by including analytic philosophy (in particular to inform the idea of a decision in relation to an intention and the theory of many possible futures) and political thinkers from both sides of the political spectrum, such as Schmitt and Habermas.,For a phenomenology and existentialism about time and the future, Lampert says very little, almost nothing, on decisions about dying and killing: 'Decisions resulting in somebody's death, for example, clearly limit variation . . .' (p 290) What about the death of everybody, or the decider's?

Rather than artificially reintroduce competition through an antitrust campaign or regulate these services as public utilities (or even nationalize them), Malmgren argues that we ought rather to see “social media as a public commons” and hand “collective power over digital platforms to the people they connect.”,Under capitalism, where people spend most of their lives working jobs they do not like and are lacking in opportunities for unstructured sociability, it makes sense that they would spend a good deal of their “free time” binging on short bursts of prescribed “social” interaction.,The question here is whether the negative effects of platform capitalism on our lives are specific to capitalism, in which case these platforms would be legitimate social goods if freed from the predations of the market, or whether these platforms, like private automobiles, are so inextricably tied to the destructive norms of capitalist society that they would likely disappear or greatly reduce in importance under socialism.,In a meta-analysis of seventy-two studies, the psychologist Sara Konrath and her research team found that empathy levels among college students are 40 percent lower today than they were twenty years ago — a development they attribute to, amongst other things, the “rising prominence” of “media use in everyday life”: “With so much time spent interacting with others online rather than in reality, interpersonal dynamics such as empathy might certainly be altered.”,How is it that people acclimated to a lack of self-reflection, empathy, and genuine human conversation by the platforms themselves represent an “ideal polity for a democratic model of governance”?

Mittelstadt, Russell, & Wachter on Explaining Machine Learning Decisions
Here is the abstract:

Recent work on interpretability in machine learning and AI has focused on the building of simplified models that approximate the true criteria used to make decisions.,These models are a useful pedagogical device for teaching trained professionals how to predict what decisions will be made by the complex system, and most importantly how the system might break.,We focus on the distinction between these models and explanations in philosophy and sociology.,These models can be understood as a "do it yourself kit" for explanations, allowing a practitioner to directly answer "what if questions" or generate contrastive explanations without external assistance.,Although a valuable ability, giving these models as explanations appears more difficult than necessary, and other forms of explanation may not have the same trade-offs.

Congress: Amazon didn’t give “sufficient answers” about facial recognition
Although two House members in the group sent a similar letter to CEO Jeff Bezos back in July, the larger group now says that Amazon "failed to provide sufficient answers" about its commercial facial-recognition program, known as Rekognition.,Prior to the July letter, the American Civil Liberties Union used the service in a demonstration of its inadequacy—the service falsely matched 28 members of Congress with mugshots.,Does Amazon build protections into the Rekognition system to protect the privacy rights of innocent Americans caught up in either the biometric databases used by law enforcement for comparison, or in the data law enforcement uses to search those databases?,Does Amazon Rekognition contain a mechanism for automatically deleting unused biometric data?,Amazon did not immediately respond to Ars' request for comment.

The Promise and Peril of Personalization
To generalize, this example involves A sharing personal information with B so that B can use the information to customize a product or service to satisfy A’s needs (preferences).,For both the tailor-customer and doctor-patient examples, personal data is an input used to improve an output (dress, suit, medical treatment) such that the improvement directly serves the interests of the person whose information is being used.,Corresponding with the first model, it could mean that choice architect B uses data about A’s personal preferences and values to shape the nudge’s objective.,For example, B might personalize the default saving rule for various employees, perhaps by better matching the initial savings amount to individuals’ personal profiles (e.g., based on age, personal discount rates, health, etc.) or even by customizing default investment allocations (e.g., based on predicted risk tolerances).,Personalization helps B identify and overcome the specific impediments and obstacles to rationality faced by A. B can custom fit the nudge—the stimuli that shape the choices perceived by A—to engineer a rational response.
