Indian rupee's slide may only worsen in 2019 — Quartz India
You thought 2018 was bad for the rupee? Just wait for 2019 https://ift.tt/2Cz2rGi Prospective https://ift.tt/2oVLBI9 September 10, 2018 at 10:01AM

The Indian rupee has had a terrible year so far—but it is only likely to get worse.

The 2019 general elections may drag down the currency even further, warns global financial services firm Nomura.

“The key risks (to the rupee) stem from the government turning more populist ahead of the 2019 general elections (worsening domestic fundamentals) and a sharper-than-expected domestic growth slowdown (triggering equity outflows),” the company said in a research report released today (Sept. 10).

The Narendra Modi government’s term is scheduled to end in May 2019 and the weakening rupee has already become a political issue. Over 20 opposition parties, led by the Indian National Congress, have called for a nation-wide strike today to protest the currency’s depreciation and a lack of government intervention to stem the fall.

This year, Asia’s worst-performing currency has already lost 13% of its value. On Sept. 10, it plummeted to a new low, crossing the Rs72.50 per dollar mark, for the first time ever.

All fall down

Currencies of other emerging economies, too, have been sliding, putting more pressure on the rupee.

Seven countries, including India’s neighbouring nations Pakistan and Sri Lanka, are vulnerable to exchange rate crisis in the next 12 months, warns Nomura. Others include South Africa, Argentina, Egypt, Turkey, and Ukraine. On the other hand, India remains vulnerable, not fragile, the report said.

The crisis in Turkey—the lira has weakened by over 40%  this year—has already taken a toll on the rupee and other emerging economy currencies. Rising global crude oil prices, the increasing current account deficit, and trade sanctions imposed by the US government on countries like China have been contributing to the fall. In August, India’s central bank has also warned that the global economies are at the start of a currency war, spooked the currency further.

Clearly, this doesn’t augur well for the country’s economy or companies.

“A sustained weakening of the rupee would be credit negative for its rated Indian companies, particularly those that generate revenue in rupees but rely on US dollar debt to fund their operations and have significant dollar-based costs, including capital expenses,” according to a Sept. 10 report by credit rating agency Moody’s.

Joseph Stiglitz on artificial intelligence: 'We’re going towards a more divided society'
It must be hard for Joseph Stiglitz to remain an optimist in the face of the grim future he fears may be coming. The Nobel laureate and former chief economist at the World Bank has thought carefully about how artificial intelligence will affect our lives. On the back of the technology, we could build ourselves a richer society and perhaps enjoy a shorter working week, he says. But there are countless pitfalls to avoid on the way. The ones Stiglitz has in mind are hardly trivial. He worries about hamfisted moves that lead to routine exploitation in our daily lives, that leave society more divided than ever and threaten the fundamentals of democracy. A distinction Stiglitz makes is between AI that replaces workers and AI that helps people to do their jobs better. Beyond the impact of AI on work, Stiglitz sees more insidious forces at play. Armed with AI, tech firms can extract meaning from the data we hand over when we search, buy and message our friends. It is used ostensibly to deliver a more personalised service. That is one perspective. Another is that our data is used against us. It is the potential for datasets to be combined that most worries Stiglitz. Stiglitz poses a question that he suspects tech firms have faced internally. “Which is the easier way to make a buck: figuring out a better way to exploit somebody, or making a better product? With the new AI, it looks like the answer is finding a better way to exploit somebody.” So far, Stiglitz argues, neither governments nor tech firms have done enough to prevent such abuses. “What we have now is totally inadequate,” he says. “There is nothing to circumscribe that kind of bad behaviour and we have enough evidence that there are people who are willing to do it, who have no moral compunction.”

Satin and Sawdust - Ltleflrt - Supernatural [Archive of Our Own]
When Castiel moves out of Jimmy's house and into his own place for the first time, he saves money on buying a home by investing in a Fixer-Upper. He knows nothing about how to fix the many problems the house has, but he figures he's smart enough to figure it out. Unfortunately it's not too long before he learns that he's way in over his head.

Thankfully his new neighbor Dean is a handyman, and agrees to help him out. He knows Dean has a bit of a crush on him, but he's not taking advantage of it, really. Dean's a great guy, and quickly becomes a good friend.

But a flash of satin under Dean's toolbelt changes everything.
