The Best Ways to Use 3D Touch on Your iPhone
In case you missed it, I've been writing for Lifehacker as of recently (part of the reason posting has slowed down here, but I'm working to balance that back out). I thought this post on the myriad ways you can use 3D Touch on iPhones worth sharing. Now that 3D Touch looks likely to be removed, I'm taking as much advantage of it as I can. I don't care what anyone says, it is (was) a useful innovation.

9/11 anniversary: Data shows US terrorism is rising on the right — Quartz
Decades after 9/11, the American right is behind a terrorism surge https://ift.tt/2QmUCXe Prospective https://ift.tt/2x7UYYK September 11, 2018 at 05:57PM

Donald Trump marked the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks today in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, near the crash site of the downed United Airlines Flight 93.

In a speech, the US president remembered the passengers who fought to regain control of the plane and to divert it from its target in Washington, DC. “America’s future is not written by our enemies,” Trump said. “America’s future is written by our heroes.”

On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, 19 hijackers from terror group Al Qaeda caused the crashes of four commercial planes: In addition to Flight 93, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York City. A fourth plane, American Airlines Flight 77, hit the Pentagon in Washington, DC. A total of 2,977 people were killed.

Today, terrorism is largely in retreat around the world. However, it is rising in the US, according to the University of Maryland’s Global Terrorism Database, which compiles and releases annual statistics on terrorism.

The US has seen a recent surge in terror-related violence

Globally, terror attacks fell from about 17,000 in 2014 to about 11,000 in 2017. They dropped almost 40% in the Middle East.

But the US has seen a recent surge in terror-related violence over the past 10 years, with 65 attacks in the US last year, up from six in 2006.

A Quartz analysis of the database shows that almost two-thirds of terror attacks in the US last year were tied to racist, anti-Muslim, homophobic, anti-Semitic, fascist, anti-government, or xenophobic motivations.

The remaining attacks were driven by left-wing ideologies (like pro-LGBT, environmentalism, and anti-Republican) and Islamic extremism. Although Trump mentioned “radical Islamic terrorism” in his speech today, only seven terror attacks in 2017 were linked to Islam.

Apple will live stream its iPhone event on Twitter for the first time - The Verge
Apple will live stream its iPhone event on Twitter for the first time https://ift.tt/2QmHl0D Prospective https://ift.tt/2O8FZoT September 11, 2018 at 05:54PM

Apple has been live streaming its product announcements for years, but the company has always tried to keep the events on-platform — until now. TechCrunch reports that, this year, Apple will also be streaming its iPhone announcement on Twitter, where it has the chance to reach a new audience who might not know to check out Apple’s website for a streaming link.

This is Apple’s second major expansion in streaming options this year. For WWDC, the company also opened streaming up to people using Chrome and Firefox — previously, Apple had limited viewing to Safari and Edge users only on the desktop. It had been a ridiculous and arbitrary constraint that really just served as an annoyance for the many Mac owners who use other browsers.

It appears that Apple will be running the livestream through its ridiculous Twitter account, which never tweets and only runs paid ads, so that you can’t actually see anything on its profile page. But once you spot the ad (embedded below), you can like it, which will get Apple to tweets updates at you about the event once it starts tomorrow. It seems like that’s where you’ll be able to watch the live stream, rather than this being a direct partnership with Twitter to have it embedded all over the place.

There was no good reason for Apple to keep limiting its live streaming audience except to promote Safari (and “I’ve been forced to use Safari” is not good encouragement to switch), so it’s good to see Apple not just lifting that restriction, but coming to where people actually are. Now, hopefully it figures out that YouTube offers a live streaming feature, too.

Excel formula: Cell contains one of many things | Exceljet
=SUMPRODUCT(--ISNUMBER(SEARCH(things,B5)))>0

Notice that if we have even one TRUE in the array, we know a cell contains at least one thing in the list. So, we can force the TRUE / FALSE values to 1s and 0s with a double negative (--, also called a double unary):

=SUMPRODUCT(--ISNUMBER(SEARCH({"red","blue","green"},B5)))>0

One problem with this approach is you may get false matches from substrings that appear inside longer words
