Econometrics Beat: Dave Giles' Blog: The Series of Unsurprising Results in Economics (SURE)
We publish scientifically important and carefully-executed studies with statistically insignificant or otherwise unsurprising results. Mitigating the publication bias and thus complementing other journals in an effort to provide a complete account of the state of affairs; Serving as a repository of potential (and tentative) “dead ends” in Economics research. Providing an outlet for interesting, high-quality, but “risky” (in terms of uncertain results) research projects; Decreasing incentives to data-mine, change theories and hypotheses ex post or exclusively focus on provocative topics.' This is a novel venture that has a lot to offer at a time when research replicability and publication bias are (rightly) receiving so much attention. I'm delighted to be associated with the new journal as a member of its Editorial Board.

Dear Open Source Projects… – Yurii Rashkovskii – Medium
Photo by Daniel Hansen on Unsplash A few days ago, I posted this tweet after discovering that yet another open source project I am using has that funny Heroku app to join their chat: There have been many cases where I was able to figure out some subtle or obscure issues by finding some references to the problem I am experiencing in IRC chat logs. In an ideal world people should perhaps document important findings or FAQ material noted in logs, but we’re all humans — so this doesn’t always happen. On the other hand, when the software you run serves very few clients, it can afford to be less scaleable, because the vastness of the internet and fragmentation of users is what would effectively scale it. This is one of the reasons I started SIT [shameless plug] , a true serverless issue tracker that gives the same functionality without the dependency on GitHub.

'PUBG' War Mode comes to Xbox One in winter 2018

PUBG's PC-based players have already moved beyond battle royale with War Mode, so when do Xbox One gamers get their turn? It won't be too long. PUBG Corp and Microsoft have confirmed that War Mode will reach the Xbox crowd in winter 2018. As before, it's really built for gamers who prefer immediate firefights over the long buildup of the core game -- players parachute into a relatively small circle at frequent intervals already prepared to fight.

You'll also have more variety for places to play. PUBG's third, more compact map (Sanhok) is due to reach the Xbox One in the summer. Apart from switching to a jungle setting, its core attraction is a map just a quarter the size of the original Erangel, guaranteeing that you'll meet opponents sooner.

The schedule still puts Xbox One users somewhat behind their PC counterparts, but it's establishing a clear pattern. While you may not get features at the same time, you won't have to wait so long that the thrill of the experience will evaporate.

Microsoft bought five studios to fix its Xbox game problem
Microsoft bought five studios to fix its Xbox game problem https://ift.tt/2sNrRsv Prospective https://ift.tt/2JulIrs June 10, 2018 at 11:06PM

Engadget

It's no secret that Microsoft's lack of exclusive games is partially to blame for the Xbox One lagging behind the PS4. To rectify this, the company's gone on a bit of a shopping spree, acquiring five studios under its Microsoft Studios umbrella. Four of these are existing outfits: Undead Labs (State of Decay), Playground Games (Forza Horizon), Ninja Theory (Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice) and Compulsion Games (We Happy Few). The fifth is an all-new studio called The Initiative headed by Darrell Gallagher, the former chief of Crystal Dynamics who spearheaded the Tomb Raider reboot.

The lack of must-have games is no secret to Microsoft, either: The same week it launched the Xbox One X last fall, Xbox head Phil Spencer told Bloomberg that they'd switch their focus to buying or creating studios to produce content in-house. Today's announced acquisitions certainly fulfill that promise, and there's no telling how many more Microsoft might bring under Microsoft Studios' wing.

Microsoft

Microsoft stunned the assembled audience at its E3 2018 press conference with not only intense gameplay footage of "The Division 2" from Ubisoft, but also an official release date for the highly-anticipated sequel: March 15th, 2019. News of Tom Clancy's post-apocalyptic MMOFPS first surfaced back in March of this year and looks to build off of its predecessor in terms of both cinematics and gameplay. The story takes place just six months after the initial outbreak as the agents of The Division face a burgeoning civil war.

Microsoft

Microsoft wasn't going to let E3 go by without mentioning new content for Sea of Thieves. At it's Xbox press conference today, we got a glimpse at the forthcoming "Cursed Sails" and "Forsaken Shores." New lands look super dark, with plenty of fire, ash and a host of cursed adventurers. We found out in April that updates would prioritize new maps over perks, and that certainly seems to be the case here. While "Forsaken Shores" won't be available until September, "Cursed Sails" is set to arrive next month. Get a taste of what's coming to Xbox and Windows 10 via the trailer below.
