Americans are still getting a lot of their news from Facebook — Quartz
Facebook is still a hugely popular news source in the US, even though users expect the news to be fake September 11, 2018 at 04:34PM https://ift.tt/2MrDzAc

Americans are using Facebook to get their news just as much as they did last year, despite Facebook’s own efforts to de-prioritize news content, and despite the intensifying conversation surrounding misinformation on the platform.

Citing convenience more than anything else, the majority of Americans get news from social media (68%), even though 57% of them also expect it to be largely inaccurate, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center.

Forty-three percent of Americans get at least some of their news from Facebook, with the second-most popular social media platform for news being YouTube, where falsehoods are a particularly pernicious presence.

Facebook is trying many solutions to fight the scourge that is misinformation, including working with external fact-checkers. But recent data shows that that battle is far from over, and sketchy sources are thriving on the platform, just as they had in the past.

I saw "The Nun" on a 270-degree movie screen so you don't have to — Quartz
Cinema is not ready for 270-degree movie screens September 11, 2018 at 04:27PM https://ift.tt/2O8nRLH

CJ 4DPLEX, the South Korean company behind the 4DX movie format, has developed a new way to enjoy fine cinema: a 270-degree, movie-viewing experience that makes use of the side walls in theaters, known as ScreenX. This is how I saw The Nun, the latest horror movie in James Wan’s The Conjuring universe. Everything about it was utterly unremarkable.

The movie, which did quite well at the box office opening weekend, traces the origins of a demonic nun who first appeared in The Conjuring 2. The Nun takes place two decades earlier, in Romania in 1952, where a priest and a young religious woman are investigating the death of a nun who took her own life. The movie was bad. The story was pointless and predictable. It earned positive reviews from a mere 26% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

The screen format didn’t help. About 25 minutes of the 1.5-hour movie made use of the full ScreenX format. The scenes were edited for ScreenX in post-production, a CJ 4DPLEX spokesperson told Quartz. (The company hopes to someday be part of a the pre-production process.) The theater where the screening took place, Regal Cinemas in Manhattan’s Union Square, wasn’t originally built for a 270-degree screen either. Lights and exit signs protruded from the screens on the side walls, a constant reminder that I was in a movie theater and not a haunted abbey in 1950s Romania.

While less invasive than 3D might have been, many of the movie’s jump scares didn’t land—in part because the 270-degree screen made it hard to see what was happening. From my vantage point near the back of the theater, anything popping out of a corner of the screen, or lurking in the periphery of a shot, was lost.

When the side panels were used, it normally signaled something spooky was about to happen. In some scenes, the panels displayed the walls of a long, narrow hallway leading to a mysterious door that begged not to be opened. In one, where the ScreenX format was used well, a character walked through a cemetery at night as bells rang on grave stones all around her. The side screens gave the impression of being surrounded by the cemetery, while keeping the focus on the character.

There are currently seven ScreenX locations in the US, and 150 in the world. Perhaps a different theater or a different movie would have yielded more pleasant results. But based on my experience, if 270-degree video is the future of cinema, it still has a long way to go.

Denver says electric scooters are "toys" and should be ridden on the sidewalk — Quartz
A US city thinks electric scooters are “toys” and should be ridden on the sidewalk September 11, 2018 at 04:12PM https://ift.tt/2N95E4f

Scorned by San Francisco, Lyft last week launched electric scooters in Denver, Colorado.

Lyft’s scooters are available in Denver from 6am to 8pm. They cost $1 to unlock and $0.15 per minute, with the clock starting when you reserve. Denver has also issued permits for up to 350 dockless electric scooters to Bird, Lime, Razor, and Spin. The city has come a long way since it seized and impounded hundreds of Lime and Bird scooters, fining the companies $150 per seized device, earlier this summer.

A popular critique of scooters in other US cities has been that scooters are a danger to pedestrians because people ride them, improperly, on the sidewalk. California prohibits motorized scooters from being ridden on sidewalks. That didn’t stop people from doing it anyway. One concerned San Franciscan wrote to the San Francisco Chronicle about a hit-and-scoot she observed with a scooter and a pedestrian in Oakland earlier this month. ”The event of electric scooters on city sidewalks is a disaster,” the letter writer said.

In Denver, however, the opposite is true: Electric scooters can only operate on the sidewalk. According to guidelines issued by Denver’s Department of Public Works for its dockless vehicle pilot program, “e-scooters are considered ‘toy vehicles’ and are not allowed in the bike lanes or in general traffic.” Toy vehicles! These scooters aren’t technically designed for children, given that they generally travel around 15 mph and can carry riders weighing up to 200 pounds. But maybe in a sense they are.

“Denver Public Works is navigating through local and state law to see if we can allow electric scooters in the bike lanes, but we’re not there yet,” Heather Burke, a public work spokeswoman, said in an email.

Lyft’s FAQ for scooter riders in Denver dutifully notes this. “You should only ride the scooter on sidewalks—don’t ride in the street, in bike lanes, within designated parks, or on park trails,” Lyft instructs riders. “Please yield to pedestrians when riding on sidewalks.” Hopefully those sidewalks don’t get too crowded.

Woodward book: Trump doesn't understand how the U.S. economy is changi
Trump doesn’t really understand how the U.S. economy is changing, per Woodward’s book https://ift.tt/2MooQpH Prospective https://ift.tt/2NysZvE September 11, 2018 at 10:29PM

One of the more illuminating passages in Fear, Bob Woodward’s new book on the Trump White House, centers on former economic adviser Gary Cohn and his apparently fruitless attempts to educate Donald Trump on the changing nature of the U.S. economy and the impact of technologies like self-driving vehicles.

During one of their first discussions, Cohn told Trump that robotics could lead to job losses and that, during his presidency, he is going to have to deal with the automation of cars and trucks, especially since many Americans make a living behind the wheel. Trump’s response, per Woodward: “What are you talking about?”

Later, Cohn tried to correct Trump’s mistaken belief that factory jobs wouldn’t come back, saying Americans by and large don’t aspire to work in assembly factories: “I can sit in a nice office with air conditioning and a desk, or stand on my feet eight hours a day. Which one would you do for the same pay?” He added, per the book: “People don’t want to stand in front of a 2,000-degree blast furnace. People don’t want to go into coal mines and get black lung.”

But his lessons fell on deaf ears. “Trump wasn’t buying it,” writes Woodward. When Cohn asked Trump why he clung to such views, Trump responded, “I just do. I’ve had these views for 30 years.”

Per Woodward, Cohn quipped in response: “That doesn’t mean they’re right. I had the view for 15 years I could play professional football. It doesn’t mean I was right.”

Woodward’s reporting has been challenged by Cohn, who told Axios: “This book does not accurately portray my experience at the White House. I am proud of my service in the Trump administration, and I continue to support the president and his economic agenda.”
