Village Media, relying on local advertisers, seems to have found a scalable (and profitable) local news model » Nieman Journalism Lab
Village Media is doing that weird thing where it’s using only digital advertising to support local news — and it’s working. via Pocket

Fewer nosy neighbors and data overlords: This German publisher is trying to build a hyperlocal social network » Nieman Journalism Lab
Dog poop and parking spot shortages: just local news things. These story topics might seem trivial individually but are the core of what matters to local communities — and local news consumers. It’s journalists listening for their questions and getting them answers. via Pocket

Can this network of lit-to-be-local newsletters unlock younger civic engagement? » Nieman Journalism Lab
As a younger-generation American who wants to be informed about my local area, is there a good option to get local news that doesn’t involve reading a site that feels like its pop-ups are draped with cobwebs? via Pocket

NationBuilder: Software for leaders
"a cross between a content management system and a customer relationship management (CRM) package, but that's because this membership management platform is geared more towards attracting people to engage with your cause rather than administering them as a group. The original focus of the firm's marketing efforts was towards non-profits and political campaigns, but they are now reaching out to musicians and artists as well as restaurants and anyone trying to generate an online following.

How Millennials Became The Burnout Generation
their writing on homelessness, social psychologist Devon Price has said that “laziness,” at least in the way most of us generally conceive of it, simply does not exist. “If a person’s behavior doesn’t make sense to you,” they write, “it is because you are missing a part of their context. It’s that simple.” My behavior didn’t make sense to me because I was missing part of my context: burnout. I was too ashamed to admit I was experiencing it. I fancied myself too strong to succumb to it. I had narrowed my definition of burnout to exclude my own behaviors and symptoms. But I was wrong.

I think I have some of the answers to the specific questions that made me start writing this essay. Yours are probably somewhat or substantially different. I don’t have a plan of action, other than to be more honest with myself about what I am and am not doing and why, and to try to disentangle myself from the idea that everything good is bad and everything bad is good. This isn’t a task to complete or a line on a to-do list, or even a New Year’s resolution. It’s a way of thinking about life, and what joy and meaning we can derive not just from optimizing it, but living it. Which is another way of saying: It’s life’s actual work.
