The Learning House, Inc. and Aslanian Market Research surveyed 1,500 current, future and recently graduated online students to identify the programs and services they want most. Optimizing course content and websites for mobile is vital for colleges and universities that strive to grow their online student population. As three-quarters of online college students pursue a degree for career-focused reasons, career services are increasingly applicable to their post-graduation success. For students who have experienced both in-person and virtual classrooms, 85 percent feel that learning online is as good or better than attending courses on campus. Particularly in the graduate student segment, areas such as computers and IT, health & medicine, and STEM have seen steady growth compared to 2014 data.

The Beginning of a New Era in the Online Degree Market | EdSurge News
In addition, the rapid growth and achievement of scale that the Georgia Tech and University of Illinois programs have experienced are further evidence of the consolidation of enrollment in a smaller set of market leaders. This direction is also highly appealing to employers, who are increasingly subscribing to MOOC course libraries for corporate learning and development–and who also favor sharing the investment in full degrees with employees. Steadily, academic institutions are recognizing learning that happens outside of the ivory tower – opening up significant new opportunities for learners, while converging—for the first time—the “classic” online degree market with spaces and student needs that have long been adjacent. More than 75 percent of online students enroll at an institution within 100 miles of their homes, according to recent research from The Learning House (and consistent across past surveys over time). A majority of online students visit campus to access services and support, or to attend events and in-person courses, in a true blending of online and in-person.

We use confidential administrative data on bus and train operators from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to show that the weekly earnings gap can be explained entirely by the workplace choices that women and men make. Using clinically validated surveys, we find 18% of graduate students experiencing moderate or severe symptoms of depression and anxiety — more than three times the population average — and 11% reporting suicidal ideation in a two-week period. Abstract The U.S. government spends about 1% of GDP (165B USD) each year on highway and bridge investment, often employing scaling auctions to procure construction work from private firms. Using data on bridge maintenance projects undertaken by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), we demonstrate reduced form evidence that bidding behavior is consistent with optimal skewing under risk aversion. But an abrupt change occurred in the fall of 2008, when small lenders left the federal funds market en masse and those that remained lent smaller amounts, less frequently.

https://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2018/11/women-earn-less-men-evidence-train-bus-operators.html
Even in a unionized environment, where work tasks are similar, hourly wages are identical, and tenure dictates promotions, female workers earn $0.89 on the male-worker dollar (weekly earnings). We use confidential administrative data on bus and train operators from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to show that the weekly earnings gap can be explained entirely by the workplace choices that women and men make. Women take more unpaid time off using the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and work fewer overtime hours than men. Men and women plan to work similar overtime hours when they are scheduled three months in advance, but men actually work nearly 50% more overtime hours than women. When selecting work schedules, women try to avoid weekend, holiday, and split shifts more than men.

Colonial Canada: Making the Familiar Dis/Comfortingly Strange | Borealia
Nova Scotia illustrates well the messy religious, ethnic, national, and imperial complexities of the early modern North Atlantic: the land of Mi’kma’ki, their sometimes uneasy co-existence with French Acadian settlers, the Wabanaki federation and its contestation of Northern New England, the first plural moment of Acadian-Mi’kmaw populations occupied by British colonial troops, of a global war that expelled the French population and brought in New Englanders and Germans, of Mi’kmaw representatives at Niagara, of a globe-shattering revolution that saw local republicans thwarted and “Loyalists” (white and black, plus their human property) instated, of trade routes that linked Nova Scotia ships, George’s Bank fish, Caribbean sugar and rum, and enslaved African bodies. The condition – be that cultural, economic, political – of Bengali peasant-workers was not the same as that of Catholic Highland settlers nor that of Mi’kmaw villagers, but they shared dimensions of a relationship to power and a place in a universalising history of progress and improvement. than the republics of America and France, don’t know, or care, why the Cree, the Mi’kmaq and the Metis matter, nor the 18th-century constitutional framing of states, don’t acknowledge the fraught immigration history of the country, the powerful role of civil society in building institutions and relations that support the common weal, no longer see the benefit of the welfare state, nor the struggles and accommodations that have a

Daring Fireball: The 2018 iPad Pros
In the normal universe, Moore’s Law has stopped delivering significant year-over-year returns, and high-performance portables need fans to cool them. At the hands-on area after last week’s event, Apple was showing Adobe Lightroom editing 50 megapixel RAW images from a Hasselblad camera. Apple bragged during the iPad Pro introduction that they are faster than 92 percent of notebook PCs sold in the last year. I never really thought to complain about the glossy texture of the original Pencil, but the moment I laid hands on the new one I realized matte is better for this product. When rumors surfaced that the new iPad Pros were moving from Lighting to USB-C, there was a lot of speculation that Apple would need to make a new Pencil with USB-C.

Chris's Wiki :: blog/web/FileBasedMetadataInVCS
@thatcks :
I like having a file-based blog engine, but mine does make changing
the 'category' of a post somewhat painful and a bit disruptive (it
re-appears in syndication feeds). My immediate mental reaction to this suggestion made me realize a
view of mine that I've slowly and painfully formed over the years
of operating DWiki , the software behind Wandering Thoughts . In a file based website engine, any form of metadata that you
can't usefully commit into common version control systems is a
mistake . Putting important entry information into essentially
opaque JSON blobs that you can't read or edit by hand? Similarly, if you use any filesystem
metadata (either because it's convenient or because it's necessary),
it should be created or set from text-based versions of the same
information.

Worthwhile Canadian Initiative: Has Canada's female employment rate maxed out?
For example, as the Canadian population gets older, relatively more workers are in the late 50s/early 60s age groups, where health problems are more common. In the year 2000, the oldest Baby Boomers reached their mid-50s, and the employment rate of women aged 55 to 59 started to take off. The difference in male and female employment rates, both in absolute and in percentage terms, increases with age. Even if discrimination doesn't prevent older women from being hired, it may make working less pleasant - less respect from coworkers, fewer opportunities for advancement, and so on. We don't know much about employment strategies specifically targeted towards older women, so it makes sense to start with the tried and true: access to labour market programs, especially training and job search, subsidies for employers, internships and other programs, support for caregiving responsibilities, and policies to combat discrimination.

I exploit variation in access to paid leave that was created by long-standing state differences in short-term disability insurance coverage and the state-level roll-out of laws banning discrimination against pregnant workers in the 1960s and 1970s. The enactment of paid leave led to shifts in labor supply and demand that decreased wages and family income among women of child-bearing age. Abstract: This paper evaluates the long-run effects of Head Start on human capital and economic self-sufficiency using large-scale, restricted 2000-2013 Census-ACS data linked to date and place of birth in the Numident. We find that the human capital index of children induced to participate in Head Start increased by 10 percent of a standard deviation. Statistical Inference as Severe Testing by Deborah G. Mayo
Advance praise:'Deborah G. Mayo argues forcefully for a frequentist position on statistical inference, and it is a pleasure to see how passionately she treats the various issues analyzed. Advance praise:'Written as a series of tours and excursions, Deborah G. Mayo's lively book revisits the foundations of statistical inference from a simple and clear premise: only trust results that pass `severe tests'. I look forward to severity calculations eventually appearing alongside confidence intervals in statistical computer programs and journal discussions of findings.' Advance praise:'In this new book that reviews several competing paradigms for the philosophy of statistics in science, Deborah G. Mayo continues her project of untangling and delineating methods, models, assumptions, and goals, with an aim of moving toward pragmatic modes of inference that go beyond wishful thinking.' Advance praise:'In this lively, witty, and intellectually engaging book, Deborah G. Mayo returns to first principles to make sense of statistics.

Sci-fi stunner Prospect values small stories in a galaxy far, far away | Ars Technica
And when this just-getting-by father and daughter duo takes an unexpected crash/detour that happens to land on a resource-rich planet littered with aurelacs (a valuable stone found inside some slimy pod that must be handled with care or "kaboom! But as its initial 10 minutes show, this gorgeous-looking sci-fi flick has big subjects to match its style: intergalactic travel regulations, tiers of consumer goods, interplanetary trade standards. In particular, Thatcher as Cee makes you feel each step of her transition from book-reading, punk-listening teen to cunning, hardened survivor who's capable of holding a rifle or stitching up a wound. When Prospect started off as a humble short film Kickstarter back in 2012, the team stated its motivations clearly: "Our goal is to capture a piece of what makes 2001 , Blade Runner , and the original Star Wars so awesome: texture," the pitch read. " The project's newly found buzz—that same Variety review said "the standalone Star Wars movies should feel like [this];" Slashfilm called it the best indie sci-fi since Moon— validates this "good story shrinks in the wash" approach.
