XO - sidnihoudini - Fall Out Boy
11 Christmas days, from 2002 to 2013.

“It’s a Christmas miracle,” Joe announces, letting his arms fall out to either side of him, head dropping back against the couch cushions. He eyes Pete and Patrick across the coffee table, Pete eating off of his plate with one chopstick and his mouth pressed directly to the edge, Patrick still sipping at his drink, most of his attention on wiping the stray noodles that Pete keeps dropping on his leg. Joe grins, and says, “The lost boys, reunited.”

Amazon Publishes Toys Catalog For The Holidays | PYMNTS.com
Amazon is launching its first-ever printed holiday toy catalog, shipping “A Holiday of Play” to millions of its customers starting this month.
“Amazon is excited to offer a new way for customers to shop for toys this holiday season,” Amazon said in a statement, according to CNBC.

There were rumors back in July that Amazon was looking to step in to fill the void Toys R Us left and print a holiday catalog of its own. Among the reasons Toys R Us went out of business, of course, was competition from online stores like Amazon (and big box retailers like Walmart, which actually displaced it as the nation’s largest seller of toys some time ago). But despite its many struggles, the famous  “Big Book” toy catalog was a staple of fall for families nationwide.

Airbnb Landlords Fined For Illegal Rentals | PYMNTS.com
San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera announced that two local Airbnb landlords will pay $2.25 million in penalties and investigation costs for running an illegal hotel chain during the city’s housing crisis.

The defendants, Darren and Valerie Lee, offered up apartments on Airbnb rather than lawfully renting the units to residential tenants. After being caught in 2014, the duo continued to break the law and unlawfully rented 14 other apartments on the home rental site until being caught after a long investigation ended in May.

As part of the settlement, the Lees are banned from renting out any units as short-term rentals in the 17 San Francisco buildings they own or manage, maintaining the more than 45 units for use by long-term tenants. That restriction is in place until at least May 2025. In addition, the settlement requires the couple to pledge their real estate as collateral to ensure compliance.

Facebook, Google Opt Into Data Privacy Contract | PYMNTS.com
Facebook and Google have signed up for new internet standards, which will require internet companies to respect data privacy and “support the best in humanity.” According to Financial Times, the standards were designed by World Wide Web Founder Tim Berners-Lee, who last week warned that the technology giants are now so dominant that they might need to be broken up.

“Those of us who are online are seeing our rights and freedoms threatened,” said Berners-Lee at the Web Summit tech conference in Lisbon on Monday (Nov. 5). “We need a new contract for the web, with clear and tough responsibilities for those who have the power to make it better.”

A report published with the contract revealed that nearly 60 companies, governments and business leaders have signed up for the contract, including Facebook, Google, the French government and billionaire Richard Branson. Amazon, which was named in the report, has not signed up and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The contract will reportedly get more specific after consultations with governments and companies, and could include a commitment to net neutrality.

Tiggly On Smart Toys to Reduce Screen Time | PYMNTS.com
And as a recent New York Times report pointed out in great detail, attitudes about kids and tech are changing. In Silicon Valley’s most elite private schools, the policy is no screen time for any student. And among the programmers who build the tech, there is a lot of genuine uncertainty about how safe it is to put that tech into their own kids’ hands.

The trouble is that good or bad, screens exist – and are so incredibly prevalent at this point that without an awful lot of vigilance (not to mention a pretty large amount of free time and stimulating analog toys), it is hard to keep kids off them.

But the team at Tiggly has a different idea when it comes to kids, screens and playtime. Instead of trying to swim against the current and fight what is likely a losing battle against technology, their focus is finding ways to make screens a part of playtime without allowing passive staring or semi-active tapping to become a kid’s dominant mode of play.

Helping the drug discovery community deliver | Medicines Discovery Catapult
The most exciting time in history to be in medicines discovery

Drug discovery is still failing too often: new treatment types are outdating the ‘white pill once per day’. Instead data is in the driving seat; it’s the most exciting time in history to be in medicines discovery.

Despite the many treatments we have today we are still scratching the surface of disease and new modes of therapy. We have a long way to go to really target addressable patient subgroups with any precision, particularly outside of cancer. If this sounds depressing, it should not. This conference was about delivering, not despairing. It’s the most exciting time in history to be in medicines discovery.

Adidas e-commerce sales boom 76% | Retail Dive
Adidas on Wednesday reported that third quarter currency-neutral revenues rose 8% or 3% to €5.87 billion from €5.68 billion last year ($6.72 billion from $6.5 billion, respectively, in U.S. dollars). Top-line sales were driven by double-digit growth in direct-to-consumer revenues with particular strength in e-commerce, where revenues grew 76% in the quarter, according to a company press release.

By brand in the quarter: Adidas revenues rose 10%, driven by double-digit growth in sport inspired and high-single-digit growth in sport performance, especially training and running. Reebok revenues fell 5% as double-digit growth in classics was more than offset by declines in training and running.
