Abraham Lincoln's Secret Visits to Slaves
In the mid-1930s, the Federal Writers’ Project interviewed thousands of former slaves, some of whom claimed the president came to their plantations disguised as a beggar or a peddler, telling them they’d soon be free.

My professional opinion as a blockchain researcher: I don’t see the point (yet)
I've spent the last 15 months researching the implications and possibilities of blockchains and related "distributed trust technologies" from a business and societal point of view. Sadly, I have to say that I don't quite get the hype, as much as I'd love to believe in a technological revolution that democratises the world economy. (NOTE: I've…

"The seeming haplessness of YouTube in the face of its own algorithms, then, is not accidental. It has become conventional wisdom that YouTube has lost control of its platform to its algorithms, which, for instance, automatically restrict any and all LGBTQ+ content but encourage people to watch Nazi and alt-right content and create child-traumatizing clickbait. But rather than a loss of control, these outcomes prove YouTube is functioning as intended. By design, YouTube has little direct control over what its platform shows to any particular viewer compared with, say, NBC. Despite making some shows, YouTube’s primary business is not producing or even curating content; it is brokering as many matches as possible between content, viewers, and advertisers."

Back From Yet Another Globetrotting Adventure, Indiana Jones Checks His Mail And Discovers That His Bid For Tenure Has Been Denied
To summarize, the committee fails to recognize any indication that Dr. Jones is even remotely proficient when it comes to archaeological scholarship and practice. His aptitude as an instructor is questionable at best, his conduct while abroad is positively deplorable, and his behavior on campus is minimally better. Marshall College has a reputation to uphold. I need not say more.

New York Attorney General files suit against Weinstein Company, allegi
New York Attorney General files suit against Weinstein Company, alleging civil rights violations http://ift.tt/2swsglB Prospective http://ift.tt/2EjDv1W February 12, 2018 at 05:24PM

An expected sale of the indelibly tainted Weinstein Company has hit a snag in the form of a lawsuit from New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the suit against Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein, and The Weinstein Company alleges “a years-long gender-based hostile work environment, a pattern of quid pro quo sexual harassment, and routine misuse of corporate resources for unlawful ends.” In short, Schneiderman contends that the company, which recently sold off lingering assets like the hit sequel Paddington 2, violated its employees’ civil rights.

This lawsuit is only the latest in Weinstein-related legal troubles, which include a class action civil racketeering lawsuit, but it arrived at a pivotal moment. An investor group led by Maria Contreras-Sweet had been in negotiations to buy TWC for $500 million–and install a female-majority board, for a measure of poetic justice–but the sale is now uncertain.

In a statement regarding the suit, AG Schneiderman said, “Any sale of The Weinstein Company must ensure that victims will be compensated, employees will be protected going forward, and that neither perpetrators nor enablers will be unjustly enriched.”

A German court just ruled that Facebook illegally uses personal data
A German court just ruled that Facebook illegally uses personal data http://ift.tt/2sqWM00 Prospective http://ift.tt/2EBeylS February 12, 2018 at 05:24PM

A regional court in Berlin said Monday that Facebook isn’t doing a good enough job of telling its users how it uses their personal data, and ruled the collection of such data illegal, Reuters reported.

A German consumer advocacy group, the Federation of German Consumer Organizations (vzvb), said the court had decided that several of Facebook’s default security settings were in breach of the law.

“Facebook hides default settings that are not privacy-friendly in its privacy center,” Heiko Duenkel, the vzvb’s litigation policy officer, told Reuters, “and does not provide sufficient information about it when users register.”

The vzvb had argued in court that Facebook, by default, always gave away a user’s location to anyone he or she was chatting with—and that it made it possible for search engines to link to users’ profiles. The organization believes the company doesn’t do enough to help users understand their privacy settings and how to modify them.

One concern highlighted by the consumer rights group was that, in Facebook’s app for smartphones, a service was pre-activated that revealed the user’s location to the person they were chatting to. Also, in the privacy settings, ticks were already placed in boxes that allowed search engines to link to the user’s timeline, meaning anyone would be able quickly and easily to find a user’s profile.

Facebook says it’s appealing the judgement, and that it has already updated many of the settings in its privacy center.

Last month, in advance of new European regulations governing companies’ use of personal data, Facebook unveiled what it calls its privacy principles for the first time. It also said it would soon be launching a fully fledged privacy center.
