Gamasutra - Algorithms for an Infinite Universe
In today's PC world, consumers enjoy high levels of sophistication in their products. Given these experiences, it's no wonder that the depth of some games occasionally falls below the expectations of the target audience. Often, the chief cause of this is that the game is simply not big enough. Once the battles have been fought and the blood spilled, the player is left with something of an anticlimax.

Gamasutra - A Real-Time Procedural Universe, Part Four: Dynamic Ground Textures and Objects
This article is the fourth in a series, and it assumes that you have already read the first three articles. If you haven't, they can be found on Gamasutra.com. I have also written two articles on atmospheric scattering: one on GameDev.net and the other in GPU Gems 2. Links to all of my online articles can be found on my website at http://sponeil.org/, along with the latest source code and executables for my published demos. The code has been completely re-factored since the last time I published it. All the common code has been pulled out into a shared library, and I borrowed a few concepts from GameDev's Enginuity series of articles.

Gamasutra - A Real-Time Procedural Universe, Part Three: Matters of Scale
This demo is getting pretty large, and I don't have time to explain everything I've added to it since the last article. Since the main addition I've made since the last article is impostors, I'll try to explain that piece as well as I can.

Sandvine releases 2018 Global Internet Phenomena Report
Sandvine's reports are always full of interesting tidbits and are worth a read for anyone interested in online video and gaming around the world. Among the many interesting stats: Netflix is 27% of global streaming video (despite having encode efficiency that is much higher than most of its peers), YouTube is 21% of global streaming video, and Amazon Prime is 6%. Notably, there are significant differences across geographies, which the report details. However, YouTube and Netflix are the top two in most. Gaming video platform Twitch showed up with 3% of global streaming video traffic, which is rather extraordinary given its focus on one genre. The report also breaks down share for online games by major geography and on a global basis. League of Legends, Fortnite, and Overwatch were tops on a global basis. Our favorite, Backgammon, failed to crack the top 10.

Gamasutra - A Real-Time Procedural Universe, Part Three: Matters of Scale
I've already explained how to expand your Z-Buffer's precision by scaling planets down both by distance and by size. However, this won't solve all your Z-Buffer problems. You'll find that in scaling large numbers down, small changes in distance are lost. A moon that should be behind a planet may be rendered in front of it, or vice versa. Even when you're close to a planet, you can still have triangles break through the Z-Buffer because the far clipping plane is to far away. Bringing it in farther just makes those other problems worse.

Active listening? Hi-fi bars arrive in Los Angeles as In Sheep’s Clothing and the Gold Line deliver vinyl-only audiophile sound
To hear proprietor Bryan Ling recall it, the new high-fidelity vinyl bar In Sheep’s Clothing wasn’t part of the plan for his new Arts District venture. He knew he wanted a pizzeria, but the space he coveted was a little bigger than he needed.
