A time of giving? Christmas Spending vs Foreign Aid
In 2015 the Dutch banking company ING conducted a survey of spending on Christmas gifts across 14 countries. The results make for interesting reading, with Brits saying they planned to spend an average of €420 on Christmas presents, and Romanians planning to spend 32% of a month’s salary. This got me thinking about the overall spending on Christmas gifts, and how this would compare to national spending on another kind of giving, that of Official Development Assistance (ODA), commonly thought of as foreign aid.

Combining ING’s data with the adult population size of each country enabled me to produce a rough estimate of how much each country spends on Christmas gifts. We can then compare this overall spending figure to each country’s yearly spending on ODA. These findings are summarised in the table below.

Learn TensorFlow and deep learning, without a Ph.D. | Google Cloud Big Data and Machine Learning Blog  |  Google Cloud Platform
This 3-hour course (video + slides) offers developers a quick introduction to deep-learning fundamentals, with some TensorFlow thrown into the bargain.

Deep learning (aka neural networks) is a popular approach to building machine-learning models that is capturing developer imagination. If you want to acquire deep-learning skills but lack the time, I feel your pain.

In university, I had a math teacher who would yell at me, “Mr. Görner, integrals are taught in kindergarten!” I get the same feeling today, when I read most free online resources dedicated to deep learning. My kindergarten education was apparently severely lacking in “dropout lullabies,” “cross-entropy riddles,” and “relu-gru-rnn-lstm monster stories.” Yet, these fundamental concepts are taken for granted by many, if not most, authors of online educational resources about deep learning.

To help more developers embrace deep-learning techniques, without the need to earn a Ph.D., I have attempted to flatten the learning curve by building a short crash-course (3 hours total). The course is focused on a few basic network architectures, including dense, convolutional and recurrent networks, and training techniques such as dropout or batch normalization. (This course was initially presented at the Devoxx conference in Antwerp, Belgium, in November 2016.) By watching the recordings of the course and viewing the annotated slides, you can learn how to solve a couple of typical problems with neural networks and also pick up enough vocabulary and concepts to continue your deep learning self-education — for example, by exploring TensorFlow resources. (TensorFlow is Google’s internally developed framework for deep learning, which has been growing in popularity since it was released as open source in 2015.)

Many older Americans are living a desperate, nomadic life - MarketWatch
In her powerful new book, “Nomadland,” award-winning journalist Jessica Bruder reveals the dark, depressing and sometimes physically painful life of a tribe of men and women in their 50s and 60s who are — as the subtitle says — “surviving America in the twenty-first century.” Not quite homeless, they are “houseless,” living in secondhand RVs, trailers and vans and driving from one location to another to pick up seasonal low-wage jobs, if they can get them, with little or no benefits.

Psilocybin drug trials: Psychedelics (acid, LSD, magic mushrooms) not only make us more spiritual and religious—they make us healthier, too — Quartz
Despite the fact that psychedelic drugs have been used for millennia as medicine in ritualistic ceremonies, there remain many questions in the scientific community about the relationship between their spiritual qualities and healing potential. Researchers at Johns Hopkins and New York Universities are giving psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, to ordained ministers in...

Veto Pro Pac Tool Bag | Cool Tools
Heavy-duty tool portability
This is by far the best tool bag I have ever owned. I am an Espresso machine field service technician and I use this bag every day. I purchased the LC version about a year ago and it doesn’t show a single sign of wear yet. In the previous 6 years I had completely worn out 2 different other tool cases.

The Veto just feels right in your hand or over your shoulder. The quality of construction is simply amazing. A molded polypropylene tray forms the bottom, the sides are 1800 denier nylon which is doubled up in many places and secured with double stitching. The bottom and handle are attached with rows of rivets, and the the zippers are massive. The large handle is attached directly to the center divider so that all the weight is carried by the center divider and end panels. There is no weight carried by the side panels and zippers. The bag comes with a wide padded shoulder strap attached with rugged metal swivels. The Veto bag is divided into two identical half’s. I keep my tools in one side and my electrical meters and plumbing hookup parts in the other. I like that this bag completely zippers closed. I don’t like the new trend for bags that are covered with external pockets, I want to know my tools are safe and secure.

Veto make two other sizes, an overall larger bag and a low-riding long one to hold carpenters tools.
