Reversing Roe v. Wade Won’t Help Republicans
The caption of this article sums up the argument: Overturning the landmark 1973 ruling, as seems more and more likely, might take away a powerful tool for energizing conservative voters — and it might motivate liberal ones.

In short, the article observes that abortion is a motivator for the right, but this is largely based on the type of analysis observed in the 80s and 90s. But as time passed, the Republican party refined and honed their messaging skills (and the institutions behind messaging) such that, by the 2000s, there was a quick reversal of the process: Issues no longer motivated voters, messaging did. To be precise, the emotions behind the messaging is what motivated voters. That tool, combined with the well-disciplined media and political apparatus behind the Republicans, voters were found to be quite pliable.

What the Republicans ultimately figured out -- and astutely perfected -- is the power of polarization. Us against them. They've been able to take most any issue and message it in a way that stoked the very emotions that causes polarization. Anger motivates voting more than any other emotion, and the Republicans have gotten really good at stoking fear and angst at anything or anyone.

Counterintuitively, Republicans routinely vote on issues that work against their own social or economic interests--taxes, health care, tariffs, and others. Political scientists have been predicting for decades that the Republican voters will quickly figure out that the policies their representatives have been promoting aren't working for them, but what time has demonstrated is that emotions are stronger. The effect is so pronounced that it seeps into people's sense of identity. When one's sense of self is primarily driven by political affiliation, it has staying power over time.

This was recently covered in a NYTimes article, which cited a survey showing the people's sense of personal identity is most guided by political affiliation. This scored more stronger than religious affiliation, nationality, or even gender. This was further supported by another survey showing that the more educated Republicans are, the more likely they are to doubt climate change and other scientific facts. Again, it's counterintuitive that science would be rejected by *educated* Republicans, but this further demonstrates the power of personal identity, a phenomenon that's disquietingly simple: More education creates a tighter bond to political affiliation. This is the new reality that the political analysis world hasn't yet adapted to. When education (facts and the ability to do analysis) is trumped by the emotional power of political affiliation, all political analysis must be reconsidered.

Indeed, I believe overturning Roe will have a beneficial effect on Republicans, though not necessarily at the voting booth--at least, not directly. Overturning Roe will motivate the inner institutional apparatus behind the Republican party, increasing funding for both political and socio-economic efforts, broadening and increasing the donor base, and most critically, further entrenching the apparatus into the daily lives of Republicans. And in a post-truth world, where blatant falsehoods are accepted without question among most Republicans, the messaging machine behind it all will have an endless supply of other issues to motivate voters--even issues that don't actually exist. And that will ultimately keep Republicans going to the voting booth.

Why great white sharks haunt the depths of deep-sea whirlpools | National Geographic
New research on famous white sharks Mary Lee and Lydia shows the giant fish spend a surprising amount of time in warm oceanic eddies. Peter Gaube, a senior oceanographer with the Applied Physics Laboratory at the UW, is quoted.
