Fortnite is such an insanely massive hit that Epic Games is giving som
Fortnite is such an insanely massive hit that Epic Games is giving some of the money back https://ift.tt/2L5cypA Prospective https://ift.tt/2Ld8qAD July 12, 2018 at 08:20PM

Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, is breaking tradition with pretty much every digital marketplace in existence by taking less than 30% of revenues on its Unreal Marketplace.

The platform, which allows Unreal Engine game developers to buy graphics, sound effects, coding blueprints, and more, will now offer an 88/12 revenue split. Epic is even applying the bigger payout retroactively to any developer that’s sold assets in the Marketplace since 2014.

According to VentureBeat, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney partially credits Fortnite, which made an estimated $318 million in June, for the new policy. “Thanks to both the Marketplace’s growth and the success of Fortnite, Epic now conducts a huge volume of digital commerce,” Sweeney said in a statement. “The resulting economies of scale enable us to pass the savings along to the Unreal Engine Marketplace community, while also making a healthy profit for Epic.”

Epic definitely did the Fortnite: Battle Royale thing to test and refine features for Unreal Engine for other developers to use, so it feels like it is almost embarrassed by the success. It’s super endearing.

— Jeffrey Grubb (@JeffGrubb) July 12, 2018

The more favorable revenue split could help Epic gain ground on rival game development toolmaker Unity, whose Asset Store hosts more than 36,000 assets and had more than 3,600 creators as of 2014, Ars Technica notes. Epic’s Unreal Marketplace currently has more than 5,000 products from 1,500 creators.

By going free, Microsoft Teams is taking on Slack more directly
By going free, Microsoft Teams is taking on Slack more directly https://ift.tt/2L4n6Fk Prospective https://ift.tt/2Ld8lNl July 12, 2018 at 08:20PM
In 2016, Microsoft unveiled a workplace collaboration and communications service called Teams. Though it sat squarely in the same domain as Slack, the only way you could get it was to subscribe to Microsoft’s Office 365 productivity-suite service. That made it feel like the company had narrowed its target audience to organizations that were already committed to a Microsoftian way of working.

Teams is still part of Office 365 (and Microsoft 365, a superset which includes Windows 10). but today Microsoft is announcing that the service is going freemium. Like Slack, it will have a free tier of service designed to be robust enough to get businesses hooked, in hopes that some will pay for more features. However, Teams’ free version imposes fewer restrictions than Slack’s:

Teams doesn’t limit how many messages you can store and search (Slack has a 10,000 message cap)

Teams provides 10GB of shared file space plus 2GB of personal storage per user (Slack offers 10GB total)

Teams has built-in group video calling while Slack limits you to one-to-one calls

Teams doesn’t restrict how many app integrations you can enable (with Slack, the maximum is 10)

On the other hand, the free version of Teams allows a maximum of 300 users; Slack’s is unlimited.

[Photo: courtesy of Microsoft]Most of Teams’ features are available for free, including a cool new option which blurs out the background during video calls (useful if you’re dialing in from your kitchen or a hectic coffee shop). Paying customers get more storage, integration with the desktop versions of the Office apps, fancier videoconferencing features (including live transcription), and other upgrades.

Microsoft 365 teamwork general manager Lori Wright told me that Teams’ free tier is meant to be an “onramp” to paid Office 365 and Microsoft 365 accounts, a vital and growing component of the company’s business. But by letting organizations try before they buy, the company is giving them the opportunity to compare the service to Slack without a commitment. And the free version sounds robust enough that some groups will be able to stick with it indefinitely.

Ireland will be the first country to divest from fossil fuels
Ireland will be the first country to divest from fossil fuels https://ift.tt/2LbusqM Prospective https://ift.tt/2Ld8j8b July 12, 2018 at 08:20PM

In the last few years, dozens of universities and churches have divested from fossil fuels. The Rockefellers Brothers Fund and the pension fund for public employees in California divested. New York City, Oslo, and other cities divested. Norway’s massive sovereign wealth fund sold off investments in some coal companies, and is considering doing the same for oil and gas companies. Now the first country will join the list of nearly 900 institutions that are divesting: Ireland will pull its money out of fossil fuels.

Ireland passed a bill in its lower house of parliament that will require the country’s national investment fund to sell all of its investments in oil, coal, gas, and peat as soon as possible, likely within five years. The bill is expected to quickly pass in the upper house of parliament, and could become law this year.

The fund currently holds investments worth more than $400 million in 150 fossil fuel companies (companies that get at least 20% of their revenue from fossil fuels). Right now, those investments help support the trillions that coal, oil, and gas companies are spending to develop new mines, oil fields, and other infrastructure–but studies have calculated that none of those resources can actually be used if the world is going to limit warming to 2 degrees Celsius. Even burning all existing fossil fuel reserves would break the carbon budget.

Investors increasingly see keeping money in fossil fuels as a risk, and public pressure is also helping lead to divestment. In Ireland, the bill came after campaigning from student groups and other activists, and was brought forward by the politician Thomas Pringle after two years of work with those groups, the Catholic development agency Trócaire, and the Global League Action Network.

The bill makes an exception for investments in Irish fossil fuel companies–but only if the money helps finance their move away from fossil fuels.
