taking everyone for a ride - Nonymos - Venom (Movie 2018) [Archive of Our Own]
Things Eddie Brock flirts with on a regular basis: death, insanity, his ex, his ex’s new boyfriend, and also the alien symbiote that lives inside his body. Not bad for a loser with no game, really.

What the Rise of the Mega-University Might Mean for the Rest of Us - The Chronicle of Higher Education
"But it’s obvious to me, and to others I spoke with in the course of reporting that article, that the emergence of mega-universities — institutions like Southern New Hampshire and Western Governors University, with big online footprints, a heavy reliance on adjuncts, and standardized curricular models — will change how higher education is provided."

This is of course the rationalized format of for-profit colleges--how would this square with the rhetoric of personalization that the AI people always use?

Don’t Forget the Role of Humans in Those Tech-Driven ‘Student Success’ Efforts - The Chronicle of Higher Education
That’s one reason I paid attention when I recently heard Andrew Magliozzi describe a new book, Prediction Machines: The Simple Economics of Artificial Intelligence, as “the most accessible explanation of AI” that he’s ever read.

Magliozzi is known to some in higher ed as the founder of a company called AdmitHub, which uses artificial intelligence to power the chatbot technology that colleges use to answer students’ questions about campus policies and services. Chronicle readers may also recall that we had him as one of our guests at our Shark Tank: Edu Edition a few years ago at the SXSW EDU conference in Austin. (Also, as I just happened to learn last month, he’s the son of Ray Magliozzi and nephew of Tom Magliozzi, the hosts of the much-beloved show Car Talk that ran for years on NPR. So at the very least, making complicated things relatable is in his blood.)

Prediction Machines “provides a framework for understanding the game-changing technology of AI,” he says. “The primary takeaway is that leaders cannot delegate AI strategy to their IT department alone, because effective implementation creates an imperative to shift the organization’s fundamental strategy.”

What’s in Store for Ed Tech? An Annual Report for Leaders Lays It Out - The Chronicle of Higher Education
On the short-term horizon: analytics technologies and new learning spaces. Already in demand, they will grow even more prevalent in the next couple of years as academe increasingly focuses on measuring what students are learning and providing them with new educational experiences, such as active-learning classrooms and makerspaces.

On a slightly longer time frame is the growth of adaptive-learning technologies, artificial intelligence, and open educational resources. As colleges seek to expand access to education and equitable outcomes, the report says, those tools and technologies can help serve the larger goals.
