The Future of Work – a Millennials point of view
The Future of Work – a Millennials point of view July 8, 2018 at 01:03AM https://ift.tt/2NxRru8

Written by Kevin O'Donovan, Technology Evangelist What do millennials really think of the Utility Industry? Is it a “boring” industry to work in? Is this industry competing for millennials who are more interested in working for the likes of Google? Let’s hear from the millennials!   For the past few years, many of us ‘experienced’ […]

Valve leaks Steam game player counts; we have the numbers | Ars Technica
Realm of the Mad God has a lot of players, showing up on the top played list on Steam, ahead of Civ 6 and many other games. Not a great comparison though as it's free to play but still, an indie game having more players than Civ 6 is pretty cool. But https://www.realmeye.com/number-of-active-players-by-rank suggests that there are fewer than 100k active players.

Tools & Craft - Episode 01: Andy Hertzfeld
That was really a breakthrough idea. At least potentially a breakthrough idea, because communication services, especially at the time, were all-- this was way pre-web, but they were hard to change and sluggish and maintained by the largest companies. It was like pulling teeth to get a new feature in. If you wanted to add a simple feature, it might take a year to develop it because of the conservative nature of the telecommunications companies. Where we had the insight if you just made the basic architecture of the server able to accept our arbitrary programs, you can unleash innovation like crazy.

So, we invented this new programming language called Telescript where programs can travel in the network between servers, gathering up what they needed and then coming back to the device. Thought that was a pretty compelling vision, but history proved us wrong. You didn't really need to do that, just the remote procedure call type paradigm was good enough, which is really what the web is based on. You don't inject code into the web to do your work for you and come back to you, you just ask a server with an HTTP request.

That was an example where we invested a huge amount of our development resources in creating this new kind of communication infrastructure for intelligent networks, and the world has— that we didn't get it established and here at 25 years later, it's not around. So, we must have been wrong.

A Dark Song (2016) ending sucked? [SPOILERS] : horror
Well, you get to ask your Holy Guardian Angel for a favor. Ask, not demand. (In the actual Abramelin ritual you are supposed to ask, once only, for enough money to live on; after that, it's all about binding various demons to you for their further humiliation by having them fulfill various little requests via magic squares)

In the context of the film, from what Solomon says, I gather that the "favor" isn't like getting Level 9 Wish in Dungeons and Dragons, it's a request for something to be granted you, something that isn't exactly going to overturn the order of the universe. He plans on asking for invisibility, but it is to be "not noticed." Bringing the dead child back to life is a Lazarus-level miracle and likely would not be honored.

Why did Solomon die? Harken back to the bit where he is slicing away at some branches and asking her for her facility with various languages. When he asks if she speaks German, she says she does and he nicks himself; he immediately takes that to mean that she is lying. In other words, her not being honest about her intentions will come back on him.

And so he gets stabbed. She hasn't been honest about what she wanted. First she says "love," then to hear her dead son's voice again, then vengeance, changing her answer over and over again. When she says "vengeance," he does the rebirth bit, drowning her, in an attempt to reset things. Doesn't work, the stab wound proves mortal.

Solomon knew the risks going in. In some senses, he's very fatalistic. Asking for invisibility "before the howl" is a telling potential request. "... the dead and the damned. Most of us are damned, you know," he said conversationally. In a deleted scene we find out that he is being pursued by the order of his old master; presumably he wants a little quiet before he dies. That's all he wants.

She's doing rather badly until she says that she's sorry in the stairwell as various entities are trying to drag her back down.

Her request to the H.G.A. is pleasing, her favor is very acceptable to a higher spiritual entity, especially if you're viewing things in a somewhat Christian context, which is definitely part of the movie.

Also in a Christian context: after all of the subtle bits, the dog howl, the dead blackbird, the knocking, remember that angels are not all sweetness and light, they're sent to do big things, like exterminate cities. Hence we see a glorious warrior, huge, difficult to look at, in a posture that is less penitent than awaiting a chance to leap into action.

It's like that Kate Bush song, "Running Up That Hill." If you're going to ask to make a deal with God, make your request a humble one.
