BBC Radio 4 - Stephen Fry and Michael Rosen talk language
I learned a lot from this!

* Language is only 50,000-100,000 years old. There are axe heads made by our ancestors 350,000 years ago
* Rhythm is super important and English has the rhythmic patterns that are suitable -- the iamb, the trochee.
* A lot of comedy is based on iambs! A lot of rap is based on trochees!
* English is an anarchic mismatch in every sentence we have Australian slang, American jazz slang, some Shakespeare, some Dickens, some P.G.Wodehouse, some comedy, some rock'n'roll. Like the way a street in London is a mismatch of architecture styles.
* Rather than getting lazier, language often gets more strict. He uses the example of "Father forgive them, they know not what they do" -> "Father forgive them, they do not know what they are doing". This is a recent change & involves adding extra auxiliary verbs ...

Ask HN: What are your favorite statistics and probability textbooks? | Hacker News
I took stats in undergrad, but it was a very rudimentary "push x sequence of buttons on your calculator in y situation" ordeal and left me with less applicable knowledge than I'd like.

Since sometime after graduation, I've taken up serious study of higher-level maths as a hobby. I think it will be most useful in my career if I also have a strong grasp on probability and statistics.

[edit] The suggestions so far have been great, but it occured to me to add that I'm working through Spivak and Apostol right now with Dedekind's essays on the side. Hopefully that gives an idea of the tone/rigor I'm after. Answers to problems is also ideal.

Ray Dalio’s Seven Bubble Indicators Are ‘Flickering But Not Flashing’
Knowing history is the key to predicting financial crises, because history repeats itself.

1. Prices are high relative to traditional measures
2. Prices are discounting future rapid price appreciation from these high levels
3. There is broad bullish sentiment
4. Purchases are being financed with high leverage
5. Buyers have made exceptionally extended forward purchases, such as of inventories, to speculate or to protect against price appreciation
6. New buyers have entered the market
7. Stimulative monetary policy threatens to inflate the bubble even more.
