Letting neural networks be weird • Aw yeah it’s time for cookies with neural networks
By seeing examples of what humans did, they can learn to translate languages, predict product sales, and even categorize text and images as innocuous or explicit (it has a lot of trouble with this last task, as it turns out). I’ve given them paint colors , bandnames , and even guinea pig names and in each case their results are somewhat… mixed. (Paint colors called Stanky Bean , Stargoon, and Turdly, for example) The problem is that it doesn’t know what any of these words mean - it’s just picking letter combinations that seem likely to it. Ontario stalls on climate action | Pembina Institute
“Today, the Ontario government released a climate plan that lacks a clear path to reduce our carbon pollution and ensure a clean, healthy, and safe environment. “A credible climate plan would, at minimum, present effective solutions to reduce carbon pollution from transportation, industry, and homes and buildings. “We will be assessing the government’s announced plan to regulate industrial carbon pollution and their proposed flexibility mechanisms such as compliance payments. “As the recent United Nations IPCC report made clear, we need urgent action to limit climate change and head off its more extreme impacts. Ontario is already experiencing extreme climate events, from the polar vortex the last few winters, to the record-setting wildfires of this past summer, to the flooding in Toronto, Ottawa, and Windsor.

Laguardia #1 Review: A Sci-Fi Comic Full of Beautiful Black People - Black Nerd Problems
With Laguardia #1 , Nnedi Okorafor continues her work of bringing a unique, insightful Black African science fiction aesthetic to audiences. The story centers on Future Nwafor Chukwuebuka, a Nigeria-American doctor who’s returning to New York pregnant from Lagos, leaving behind a concerned boyfriend/baby daddy, Citizen Raphael Nwabara. Together with colorist Devlin, Ford does a great job of bringing dark-skinned Black folks to the pages, surrounded by African art and clothes. By the end of the issue, Future has re-united with her grandmother in the Bronx and is settling in with her unborn baby and her alien plant roommate, while Citizen is getting pulled deeper into the unrest in Lagos. If on the nose social commentary with your alien sci-fi all mixed with an evocative African vibe is your speed, along with strong Black characters, I can recommend keeping up with Laguardia.

Latest House results confirm 2018 wasn't a blue wave. It was a blue tsunami. - CNNPolitics
Republican Rep. David Valadao of California's 21st District conceded on Thursday to Democrat T.J. Cox. Cox's victory combined with other election results means that Democrats have picked up a net gain of 40 seats. Put another way, this was the fourth best performance for Democrats in the 37 general House elections since President Donald Trump was born. This year's 8.6 point House popular vote win for the Democrats is the greatest on record for a minority party heading into an election. (Note: I'm assigning the Democrats and Republicans the votes for their candidates on other lines via electoral fusion .)

It’s a Good Year to Get Into Gardening Because of Weed - VICE
Since then I have spent hours browsing gardening videos on YouTube and leafing through local seed catalogues and watching how the sun and the wind move across my backyard. No, there isn’t much to do in the dead of winter except watch the barren ash trees bend in the brutal Newfoundland wind and dream about the life you will sprout up in spring. I found a little dogberry sapling in the backyard that has already grown into a spiral, so I’m also thinking about training it as a bonsai, because I’ve gone insane and now I’m completely obsessed with trees. Not far from my house is a crabapple tree that was knocked over about a decade ago but lived to grow sideways through a chainlink fence, flowering and fruiting over a hillside full of trash. The man at the counter told me I was mad to think of starting a garden in St. John’s; not only is the climate hostile, but most of the soil is polluted with old lead paint.

Canada Should Support Journalism, Not Newspaper Owners - VICE
It’s a faux pas to take a politician at their word these days, but let’s give Joly the benefit of the doubt when she declares that “non-viable business models” will not see a dime. It is an invaluable public service presently caught in the throes of market failure, because it happens on a scale that is too small to generate self-sustaining profits through a transitory period of technological shock. Hard facts and empiricism and the equitable inclusion of community voices will slowly seep up the trunk until the bare branches burst forth with Good Takes. But many of the already-existing community papers are run by large corporations that seem less interested in building a sustainable future for Canadian journalism than in having more money for their shareholders’ furnaces. The emphasis of any subsidy has to empower journalists directly to produce good work—it can’t just boil down to a bailout for the stooges who employ them.

Toxic Masculinity Is At the Heart of This Darkness - VICE
In the interim, all we have so far is reports that it appears Minassian is a high-functioning autistic man who made a Facebook post in the minutes before the killing invoking misogynist murderer Elliot Rodger and announcing the inauguration of the “incel rebellion.” For those uninitiated into the heart of darkness called Extremely Online, incels or “involuntary celibates” are a group of sad men so upset at their lack of sexual activity that they fantasize about raping, murdering, and otherwise brutalizing all women as a kind of guerilla anti-feminist warfare. It has very deep roots, especially in this country—the Montreal Massacre, where 14 women were murdered, happened long before Marc Lepine could post anywhere on the “manosphere.” But now death cults fitting every type of broken manchild flourish on the internet like weeds in the wake of a wildfire, or the slimy tendrils of some ancient underground fungus creeping up to consume the dead and dying. The teenagers who flew to Syria to found a Caliphate of murder and sexual slavery, the boys who stormed Columbine Highschool, the man who slammed his car into protestors at Charlottesville, the hundreds of other men who are convinced the only way they’ll ever feel justified and alive is to break the lives of others—these bitter fruits all grow from the same seed. For every grand spectacle of violent death, there are many more men - sexually frustrated, emotionally stunted, bitter, brooding, isolated, invisible - who carry around

Victor Chandler's BetLion roars into Kenya's gambling market - CalvinAyre.com
Victor Chandler’s African-focused online gambling operation BetLion has roared into Kenya, according to local media reports.

On Friday, Business Daily reported that BetLion had sought a betting license from Kenya’s Betting Control & Licensing Board (BCLB). The report quoted a BCLB source saying that the regulator had okayed BetLion’s application and that the site could launch its local operations before the year was through.

The Standard quoted BetLion’s chief commercial officer Spencer Okach, who acknowledged that the company was “going from strength to strength.” But Okach played coy regarding BetLion’s Kenyan intentions, saying only that “obviously [the market] is on BetLion’s radar.”

BetLion, which announced its own birth last year, is powered by sportsbook technology supplier FSB Tech. BetLion’s launch marked the return of betting industry notable Chandler after he sold his BetVictor operation to horseracing luminary Michael Tabor in 2014.

BetLion launched in Uganda last year and quickly made a name for itself by inking a major sponsorship deal with the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and its national team, the Uganda Cranes. BetLion reportedly has plans to establish roots in at least eight African markets, including Zambia.

BetLion’s interest in the Kenyan market was likely spurred by the government’s decision in September to roll back the gambling revenue tax rate from 35% to 15%. The market had been in flux since January, when the government imposed the new 35% rate after previously charging betting operators a mere 7.5%.

Kenya is one of Africa’s more mature gambling markets, and BetLion will have its work cut out competing with established operators such as SportPesa, Betway and Betin. BetLion is already facing off against those same operators in Uganda and is reportedly holding its own, so onward and upward.

No Matter What Happens With Pipelines, Justin Trudeau Is Screwed - VICE
It culminated this week with Bill 12, a law that concentrates the power to control and coordinate petroleum exports in the hands of Alberta’s natural resources minister with little political oversight. Say what you will about Rachel Notley or the hill she’s picked to die on here, but credit where it’s due for getting Jason Kenney to endorse the Alberta state seizing the commanding heights of petro production. And given that the economic viability of new pipeline expansions is questionable , the cynic in me believes that what is really going on is Kinder Morgan walking away from an unprofitable project and using environmental/protest concerns as cover, with a bonus of suing Canada if things go south. He will still probably end up fighting between two and four provinces in court over the carbon tax, he loses all his Smiling Sunny Ways in the process of securing the pipeline, and Doug Ford is still the premier of Ontario. The pseudo-harmony between climate action and oil sands expansion collapses, and Trudeau is caught in devastating partisan crossfire: from the Right that he was never serious about natural resources, from the Left that he was never serious about the environment, and from both that he is serially full of shit.

America Is No Longer a Safe Country and Canada Should Say So - VICE
Under the STC, asylum seekers who arrive legally Canadian land border crossings are often turned back to American authorities without having their refugee claims heard in this country. As long as the United States uses industrialized child abuse as a means of border control, it is not a safe country for refugees, asylum seekers, or other migrants. Assuming Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy holds— federal officials anticipate to house some 30,000 migrant children by August —it may be only a matter of time before the Supreme Court of Canada strikes down the STC. If Canadian liberalism is still worth a damn, it will proactively prevent vulnerable families from being thrown into a vicious system that separates children from their guardians and often loses track of them entirely . There is nothing left to lose in this diplomatic sanction, and Canada taking leadership here helps empower domestic and international opposition to Trump’s immigration policy.

The Phony ‘Illegal Immigrant’ Crisis and the Slow, Sad March to the 2019 Election - VICE
Pundits and news anchors breathlessly repeat claims about “illegal crossings” and “queue jumping.” Opposition MPs are forcing the Parliamentary Immigration Committee to convene for emergency meetings in August to deal with the escalating calamity. The CPC have learned that going hog wild on deliberately outrageous falsehoods in order to rile up the worst impulses in the country is a winning political strategy. The federal government and its fellow-travelers in media have been behaving as if all our cultural struggles are actually over and settled for all time (“because it’s 2015”) and tarred everyone who interrogated its empty platitudes with the same bad faith brush. As it turns out, people don’t submit to vacuous moralizing just because their boss keeps telling them “you are are better than this.” Trying to benevolently smother thought out of politics may actually have laid the groundwork for less scrupulous attempts by partisans to end-run democracy by gaming our lizard brains. One hesitates to draw the conclusion that three years of high-handed but half-assed efforts to drag the public along with whatever TEDx bullshit the Liberals are floating may have generated the feelings of resentment necessary for far right politics to flourish.

An Epic Conversation on Astra Taylor’s ‘What is Democracy?’ - VICE
Towards the end of the Republic , Plato’s immortal work of political philosophy/homoerotic fanfiction, the ancient sage Socrates warns his students against the dangers of democracy. So the film is my way to kind of honour my love for political philosophy and also show that I really think there is a capacity for reflection and self-rule that we've blocked from really allowing to flourish. And it's so interesting in this moment of #MeToo... is a feminist film really just one that says "and now we will reveal how these women have fought to become athletes, just like men" or "we'll now show how this woman has been a victim of sexual harassment." Neoliberal economists, Hayek and the rest, they wanted to move power away from the nation-state, because that's where labour unions and stuff could exercise influence and redistribute wealth. Over the course of your conversation with Wendy Brown, in the last segment, you come up against this fundamental contradiction of hyper-inclusive democracy, which is basically that ultimately, at the end of the day, the demos always has to be bounded.

Forcibly outing LGBT children to their parents is monstrous | Drew Brown | World news | The Guardian
This thorny philosophical issue has come to a head in Canada , where the conservative party in Alberta has endorsed a policy that would require schools to inform parents if their children enroll in “extracurricular activities of a religious or sexual nature”. Supporters of the policy successfully countered that the real monstrosity is a godless public school system, trampling parents’ rights to raise their children in accordance with whatever values they see fit. The family, as the alpha and omega of human society, is a thoroughly political institution: every aspect of the household, from cohabitation to the distribution of domestic labour, is a medium and method of exercising, expanding, or limiting power. Photograph: Xinhua / Barcroft Images
So it is strange to hear this argument for schoolyard surveillance from people otherwise obsessed with the idea of individual self-responsibility against statist oppression. Whether or not the UCP actually runs on this platform (its leader, Jason Kenney, has suggested he might ignore any distasteful policies passed by its membership, despite campaigning on the opposite), the party is still widely expected to win the next provincial election in 2019.

Newfoundland Needs to Chill the Fuck Out - VICE
When parents in Middle Arm, Newfoundland and Labrador, found out a government-subsidized “gay class” was coming to brainwash their kids into trans lesbian communists, they banded together to pull all but 13 students out of school for the day . So while St. John’s feels more secular than ever—school buildings all named SACRED HOLY HEART OF MARY MOTHER OF GOD notwithstanding—nearly everywhere else on the island west of Clarenville has been ceded to fundamentalists for decades. We were a thirty-minute drive from the unofficial buckle of the Bible belt: the Miracle Temple next to the highway at the Lewisporte junction, a squat little brick nightmare lit up with neon signs that say JESUS SAVES and SINNERS GO TO HELL and an enormous billboard covered in flames and a mad-eyed preacher shouting HEY! The members of Alberta’s United Conservative Party are thirsting to make homophobia an election issue, and a crashing wave of social conservatism is trying to propel Doug Ford into the premier’s office before people realize they’re allowed to vote NDP. That more of the province’s social, political, and cultural exchanges play out in polarizing online spaces means we’ll probably see more towns galvanized into contrarian backwardness by the glare of the news cycle before it’s all said and done.

God Guard Thee: Our Political Destiny is Written in the Stars | The Overcast
But content aimed at holding back this cresting tide of a new dark age was received poorly by a number of stakeholder focus groups, so after carefully consulting with my brand management team, we have decided that I’m just going to lean into it. It’s actually because I only considered the positions of the two primary celestial bodies ( Sol and Luna ) and neglected to build a full natal chart accounting for the more subtle trines, sextiles, and declensions required for piercing accuracy. When well-dignified, they are magnanimous in victory and unbroken in defeat; an aristocrat in the classical sense, one who ‘rules by excellence.’ Unfortunately, like the premier, the leader of the NDP may find herself thwarted by the awkward position of the Moon in Capricorn. Combine this with the confused fanaticism of the Moon in Pisces – a mind pulled unknowingly forever after its own furious inertia – and the legendary pettiness of provincial politics, and you might have a recipe for trouble. But there is a chilling influence on this house from his Sagittarian Moon; so cold and clear is this mind when fixed upon an object that it revolts when oppositional ideas or facts arise to cloud its vision.

RESURRECTING THE GREAT AUK - The Newfoundland Quarterly
Not only was the Great Auk an excellent source of fresh meat and bait for transatlantic sailors, but it also had fine, soft down ideal for the feathered pillows and cushions fashionable in Europe. Its body was covered in a thick layer of fat and oil good for all manner of fuel, and its eggs were so delectable that the Beothuk canoed 60 kilometres out to sea in search of the big bird’s nests. When Sir Richard Whitbourne wrote in 1622 that it was “as if God had made the innocency of so poore a creature to become such an admirable instrument for the sustenance of man,” he could not have foreseen that this providential treasure would be squandered in less than two hundred years. William Blake’s “dark Satanic mills” pale before the columns of crematory fire that lit up Funk Island like a ghastly, hellish lighthouse. It is harder to put ourselves on those schooners bound for Funk, ten millennia of brine and birdshit stinking in your nostrils over the hunger pangs, praying that this seasonal slog of blood and grease and soggy feathers will get your family through the winter.

A Depressing Dispatch from the Edge of the World—Newfoundland - VICE
When news broke that the provincial government had struck a tentative agreement with the Newfoundland Association of Public Employees that included a no-layoff clause, the St. John’s Board of Trade and the NL Employers’ Council erupted. We’re borrowing $2 million dollars a day to make payroll and the union thugs at NAPE have just tied Leviathan’s sword-arm behind his back at the exact moment we need him to start gouging out his guts to please the banks. In retaliation, the union held its own press conference to denounce the Board of Trade as a cabal of vampires, a ruthless band of wreckers who would see the whole provincial state smashed and slashed and burned for private gain. No one important, of course: the real supervillain architect of Newfoundland’s demise will live a long and happy life selling shitty luxury homes on the south end of St. John’s to the very people ruined by his government. In the meantime, I’ll be over here staring into the sea half in the bag on Alberta Premium, wondering whether I can make a life and start a family and build a future for myself in the only place I’ve ever felt at home, or whether I’m weeks or months or a few short years away from lowering Sonny’s mother down into her grave in the shadow of a U-haul.

The Rock in a Hard Place - The Deep Magazine
In his final article for St. John’s The Telegram, before returning to his hometown of Toronto last November, longtime provincial politics correspondent James McLeod sketched a first draft of Newfoundland and Labrador’s obituary: Originally from Placentia, he grew up determined to remain there, but one day on Lemarchant Road in St. John’s, suddenly realized he was happier in Toronto—a revelation that felt like both a betrayal and a liberating acceptance of self. You know, I only heard this story recently: My mother’s family were from Brighton, Notre Dame Bay, and they were getting sheet music mailed in from New York, and they were all big readers, and they all became really high-achieving people. This is a Christian settler society, so there’s the literal intended sense of “go to church, read the Bible, obey the priest.” But I always like to think about it as, actually, you may only be able to live here if you’ve already found the thing that sustains you through whatever life throws at you. So in the backrooms, the federal Liberal party and the British authorities just gave this guy omnipotent power, basically, this pig farmer from Gander, failed businessman.

https://mfeldstein.com/coursera-ceo-interview-betting-on-opm-market-and-shift-to-low-cost-masters-degrees/
Given this short timeline and the nature of investment-backed educational experiments, I think the real focus should be on whether and how MOOCs or successor models build on current scalability and openness while overcoming these four barriers. Six years later, it is becoming increasingly clear that the next-generation model for MOOCs in higher education is to become a form of Online Program Management (OPM) providers, including the near-term focus on master's degrees. This interview gives the clearest view yet of Coursera's emerging business model, and by extension it helps explain the new subset of MOOC-based OPM that includes FutureLearn, edX, and Udacity as vendors. "What we didn't realize is that while we were developing a software tool to help solve the challenge of teaching the Socratic method online, we were simultaneously creating a way to facilitate discussion-based learning in an asynchronous environment that would eventually be used in all of our future partner programs." Like the curricular materials market, the product is based on student outcomes, which wraps in the value of the credential coming from the university along with the academic and administrative experience enabled by the company.
