The Nielsen CMO Report - 2018
Nielsen's annual report focuses on CMO's evaluation of current levels of spend, confidence in ROIs across channels, planned changes in spend, and areas of investment. While there are a number of interesting takeaways, the two starkest were the confidence in and intend to grow spend in digital channels versus traditional ones, and the clear demand for further data and performance measurement contrasted against the regulatory trend.
In Nielsen's survey, 51% of CMOs ranked TV advertising either 'extremely' or 'very' important. While this dominated other forms of traditional media, it was 28ppts less than social and 22% less than search. Similarly, 43% suggested TV ads were 'extremely' or 'very' effective, which was 26ppts below both social and search. Maybe more surprising, a full 11% of CMOs suggested TV advertising was 'not at all' effective, vs just 2% for social and 1% for search. It is not surprising then that 44% of CMO respondents suggested an intent to shrink traditional budgets over the next year, while 82% intend to increase digital budgets.
On the data side, CMO's continued to show very strong demand for performance based marketing. This is not to say they want only digital, but it is clear that demand for data paths and truly measurable marketing is not slowing. This came across in commentary, but also in confidence around ROIs across various channels. We view this as a benefit to social in particular, since it can run and track ad campaigns throughout the funnel.
