Using a Blogging Tool as a Collaboration Platform
march 2011 by davidecappelli
Pulling together a new project team can be done quickly, even if your team members are spread across the entire world. But putting effective collaboration tools in place tends to take a little more time. However, there is a way to do so quickly using simple blogging tools that lets you get to work with your team, without having to wait on organizational bureaucracy or corporate IT to set up something on the internal network.

Stay Agile With Cross-platform Software Solutions
march 2011 by davidecappelli
It used to be that you could depend on Windows as the lingua franca of business computing. That’s becoming less and less the case, not only thanks to the growing presence of Mac in the enterprise, but also due to an increased shift toward mobile platforms like iOS and Android for general computing tasks.

4 Cross-Browser Testing Tools
january 2011 by davidecappelli
No matter what other presences you may have on the web, your own website is still a must. Professionally-designed websites should, of course, look good no matter what browser a user has. But it’s surprisingly tough to test all the ways that your site may look

Making Enterprise Software More Like Facebook
january 2011 by davidecappelli
Facebook is easy to use, as well as being a robust tool. Grandparents can pick up enough to browse pictures of their grandchildren in a matter of minutes, while teenagers can manage their entire social lives from the site. Furthermore, Facebook is free. So why isn’t enterprise software more like Facebook?

Why You Need a Project Manager
december 2010 by davidecappelli
Developers create code. Bakers make bread. Managers create documents. And meetings. And questions. (Lots of those.) But what about project managers? Why. Do. We. Need. PMs? [..] When a project contains multiple international teams all working together, the risk of something going bad because of lack of communication, synchronization or differences in understanding [..]

5 Delicious Alternatives
december 2010 by davidecappelli
According to a leaked presentation, Yahoo is planning on shutting down Delicious. That’s bad news for users of the popular social bookmarking tool, but fortunately, there are several excellent alternatives worth investigating. While none of them is an exact like-for-like replacement for Delicious (and none of them can match the network effect of Delicious’ large userbase sharing links with one another), they all offer a selection of useful bookmarking features..

Do You Need Those Other Social Networks?
december 2010 by davidecappelli
You probably have several or many social network accounts that you’re ignoring. Admit it. I have several dozen. You may not be as prone to excess as I am, yet you are probably still saddled with accounts at what you thought would be “the next big thing” and is now a social media ghost town, or just not what you hooped it would be.

Is Smartphone Productivity a Myth?
december 2010 by davidecappelli
I’ve been using a smartphone for around four years now, and I have a confession to make: I’m fairly sure that during that time, my cellphone usage has, if anything, become far less productive than it had been when I had only a regular old dumbphone. But with apps, email and Internet access, how could that possibly be?

december 2010 by davidecappelli
In this highly competitive, fast moving, global world, organisations are finding it increasingly difficult to attract and retain good staff. The stars of the working world are able to pick and choose amongst employers and are certainly attracted by high salaries and other financial benefits.

Jason Fried: Why Work Doesn’t Happen at Work
november 2010 by davidecappelli
Fried talks about the how absurd it that many people are most productive in trains, cafes, dens, but not in the office. One of the more salient remarks in Fried’s talk is that “people go to work and they’re basically trading in their work day for work moments“. In essence, Fried is suggesting that creative work that requires long uninterrupted stretches of focus is inherently disrupted by the distractions of modern office life.

Face time vs. Facebook time?
november 2010 by davidecappelli
There has been an recurrent question about the viability of telework ever since we first started our research. The focus of the concern was the need—or lack thereof of—for face-to-face interaction in order to have success at X, where X is whatever work outcome is at issue.
